The Audacity IPC server failed to initialize

Since updating from version 2.4.1, I can't start audacity; I always get the same error message popup:

The Audacity IPC server failed to initialize.
This is likely due to a resource shortage and a reboot may be required.

Additionally, in the system journal:

Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_screen_get_root_window: assertion 'GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed
Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_window_get_display: assertion 'GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed
Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_cursor_new_from_pixbuf: assertion 'GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed

It's definitely not a resource problem, and restarting doesn't help. Seems like other people have had this problem in past, but the threads never seem to lead anywhere. The most promising fix I've seen was setting the hostname back to the default "localhost", since I'd changed it before, but that didn't help either. I even went as far as to try wayland (I'm currently using KDE on Xorg) and a different kernel (linux-lts), but alas. No other GTK app has this issue, except for tenacity, an audacity fork.
I'm really stuck here!
