do i need dvdrtools?

i'm having some problems reading dvds and rips. for example, when trying to grab a frame of a ripped dvd in dvdrip, it will just stall with 1% left to go. no error message in dvd::rip log. or trying to view some of the "extras" on a dvd (interviews, etc.), xine will just freeze and lock up. mplayer doesn't even display the menus, but just starts right in with the movie.

pacman won't let me install dvdrtools because it says it conflicts with cdrkit. has cdrkit also taken over the functions of dvdrtools? i'd acutally prefer leaving any cd writing tools over dvd writing, because the dvd writer is on a windows computer and it's difficult to write to anyway. but i need to be able to read the dvd and ripped content. what should i do? it used to work fine, but i reinstalled arch recently, and now i'm not able to encode these rips and it's getting annoying. thanks.
