PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

EDIT: problem seems to be caused by 5.15.81-1-lts kernel, downgrade the kernel and headers for a temporary workaround

Trying to set up a basic audio output though my laptop speakers on i3.

After boot, PulseAudio does play sound through the speakers as expected, initially.
However, if I pause a video/audio that is playing normally with sound, when I resume, it sometimes stops to output any sound, across the whole system, especially in some scenarios I have observed:

  • after a period of silence (without resuming playback for a couple of minutes)

  • after I pause a video in one application, e.g. librewolf, then start another video in another application, e.g. mpv

In this state pavucontrol shows that there is audio detected on the volume meters, on both the applications and the output devices,
but there is no actual sound through the speakers.

The same behavior with

speaker-test -c 2

as well.

I can re-enable the audio output temporarily by running

pulseaudio -k

, or, it seems sometimes, killing one of the application windows with an audio output, but the problem occurs again every couple of minutes.

I tried to fix this by setting exit-idle-time to -1, in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf, and reinstalling alsa and pulseaudio packages.

Many thanks,

Steven

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

During such a situation post

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
aplay -lL
pactl list sinks
pactl list sink-inputs
journalctl -b --user-unit=pulseaudio

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

"During this situation" was supposed to imply that you should create the situation that you are actually playing back audio, if that is the output while playing back audio then your entire stream will have broken connection to the server which seems somewhat unlikely especially given the description of seeing something in pavucontrol since we should be seeing the same information in a  textual representation.

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

Hi! I have the exact same problem. This issue started to happen after I updated my packages today. I can post a list of updated packages if needed. Pulseaudio and alsa are not among the updated packages list, but linux-lts is (I'm using the LTS kernel). The information you requested:

I ran these while firefox was supposed to play sounds (playing youtube), but did not. Let me know if you need some additional information!

Edit: the logs in the journal about restarting pulseaudio is me running pulseaudio -k to fix sounds, but it keeps breaking

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

Are you invoking these pulse restarts yourself? Does it crash in some way? do you get a coredump? https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Core_d … _core_dump

I'd test downgrading the kernel to a known good version and/or checking behaviour with the pipewire stack by switching via pipewire-pulse and wireplumber packages.

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

Yes, I'm invoking restarts myself, edited the previous post too, forgot to add that. The pulseaudio process does not crash itself, and don't have any coredumps that was created by pulseaudio, or anything related.

Thanks for your suggestions, if I will have some time I'll look them up, and try them. I will post if I find something useful

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

Again sorry for the late reply. I left audio playback in the background while running these if I understood correctly.
Not sure if these are any different from what pure_bliss has provided but I though I ought to post just in case.

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

Same stipulation pulse sees and accesses the devices properly, check whether downgrading the kernel a version helps, do you see any audio card related mentions in dmesg ?

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

Downgrading to

5.15.80-1-lts

seems to have worked amazingly. Thanks a lot for all the help!

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

That's a workaround, the proper fix would be to identify and report the faulty commit in the kernel.

Since this happened in the stable version range the possible commits are luckily not that many so I'm suspecting one of these two (... or both ...)

commit b2ddd76237121155dcadfc4ae77ca1775dfc99f7
Author: Richard Fitzgerald <rf@opensource.cirrus.com>
Date: Fri Nov 4 13:22:13 2022 +0000

ASoC: soc-pcm: Don't zero TDM masks in __soc_pcm_open()

    [ Upstream commit 39bd801d6908900e9ab0cdc2655150f95ddd4f1a ]

The DAI tx_mask and rx_mask are set by snd_soc_dai_set_tdm_slot()
and used by later code that depends on the TDM settings. So
__soc_pcm_open() should not be obliterating those mask values.

The code in __soc_pcm_hw_params() uses these masks to calculate the
active channels so that only the AIF_IN/AIF_OUT widgets for the
active TDM slots are enabled. The zeroing of the masks in
__soc_pcm_open() disables this functionality so all AIF widgets
were enabled even for channels that are not assigned to a TDM slot.

Fixes: 2e5894d73789 ("ASoC: pcm: Add support for DAI multicodec")

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

I'm having the same problem. Is there a regression reported? I'm hoping it gets fixed soon so I don't have to keep using an outdated kernel.

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

If you want to get this properly reported you should try building a kernel with the commits I'm suspecting reverted and check whether that fixes things so it can be properly reported. FWIW from reading the mailing lists on these changes this might be actually primarily intended for some other changes that are only actually solved in 6.1 so chances are it might be fixed there anyway, might want to give the linux-mainline kernel a shot.

Re: PulseAudio stops speaker output unexpectedly

You're right; but my kernel compiling days are behind me. I filed an arch bug report, since it is a regression (problem isn't there in 5.15.80 lts). Hopefully someone with similar hardwrae can try it and confirm.

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/76795

Incidentally, I have a arch desktop (Intel i9), and sound works perfectly in 5.15.82-1 kernel

PS: I would also not mark this post as solved. As other posters pointed out, downgrading a kernel isn't really a solution...

@gi1242 could you please try the kernel from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p2073072
