SDDM/Xorg crashing on boot [SOLVED]

Hi, i have had an issue since i updated my install a few days back. when i tried to run

sudo pacman -Syu

it was throwing up errors with python and wouldn't update i googled the issue and found a thread that recommended using

 sudo pacman -Syu --overwrite /usr/lib/python3.10/site-packages/cairo/__pycache__/__init__.cpython-310.pyc

which i done stupidly without knowing what it actually does and it seemed to work and allowed me to update but after my next reboot i now have issues.

My install used to boot to grub then to my arch install but since updating it now hangs on the Udev systemd screen if i press alt-F3 i can then get into a TTY and enter

startplasma-wayland

which then allows me to boot into my KDE plasma desktop but i have to do this every reboot and for some reason what i think are some of my systemd services no longer work such as WiFi not working.

since having this problem I've been through loads of threads regarding similar issues and have had no joy. i have tried reinstalling grub, downgrading my kernel (Linux zen), trying new kernels and downgrading GPU drivers and running

mkinitcpio -P linux

but nothing works. i notice that if i run

journelctl -b -0

it gives me this error  -

systemd-coredump[626]: [LNK] Process 623 (Xorg) of user 0 dumped core.

Re: SDDM/Xorg crashing on boot [SOLVED]

First, while you are right that you should not run commands without understanding them, the command you ran for the python-cairo issue was good.  That was the correct solution to a minor packaging issue.  Further, that's not related to the issues of plasma not starting.

On the issue at hand, you show a core dump for Xorg, but you then manually start plasma under wayland.  Were you previously running X11 or wayland?

What services are enabled (e.g., `find /etc/systemd/ ! -type d`)?

Re: SDDM/Xorg crashing on boot [SOLVED]

Whoa, I had no idea how many services snapd uses ... but you do have a display manager service enabled which is one of the things I was looking for.  Which display manager are you using?  SDDM?  What does `systemctl status display-manager`report?

Re: SDDM/Xorg crashing on boot [SOLVED]

You appear to have conflicting network services running, which probably explains the wifi issue.

/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/systemd-networkd.service
/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/NetworkManager.service

Decide which you want to use and disable the other.

Dec 06 18:37:44 sddm[460]: Could not start Display server on vt 1
lines 1-22/22 (END)

it looks like its preset to be disabled would a systemctl enable sddm from boot again?

Edit - WiFi worked for a minute and now it's back to not working I have manually started and enabled just networkmanager and disabled the other one

Re: SDDM/Xorg crashing on boot [SOLVED]

I've never used SDDM, but it seems it always runs itself under Xorg, even if you are launching a wayland session (which is silly to say the least), and your Xorg session isn't running properly.  So if you want to debug it as is, I'd start with testing a simple X setup like twm or just a terminal launched from xinitrc.

Of course if you would rather just do away with X, you could see the note here:

Re: SDDM/Xorg crashing on boot [SOLVED]

#18 0x00007f4cb9ab295f n/a (swrast_dri.so + 0xb295f)
#19 0x00007f4cbc34fa27 n/a (libglx.so + 0x35a27)

suggests that the GPU config is broken, could be as easy as https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start
Otherwise please post an xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

i also just tried adding kms and the intel module to my initrams and running mkinitcpio -P again but it didn't seem to do anything.

(update on the WiFi fault in case anyone needs it) the issue seems to have been KDE Wallet once i changed the password and rebooted it now works as it should again.

Re: SDDM/Xorg crashing on boot [SOLVED]

Great, please edit the title and prepend [SOLVED] in your first post (you might have to shorten it a little to do that, e.g. 'SDDM/Xorg crashing on boot')
