Dual-head monitor not being recognized by xrandr

I have a Lenovo laptop and I'm trying to connect it to a somewhat old AOC monitor. To do that, I'm using an adaptor cable from HDMI to VGA, but xrandr still shows the HDMI port as disconnected even though the cable is plugged in. I literally have no idea how to fix this.
Here are some logs:

xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 16384 x 16384
eDP connected primary 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 194mm
