[Solved] Proprietary Nvidia driver produces a dot pattern

I'm having an issue where there appears to be a subtle regular dot pattern visible all over my screen. It is especially noticeable on dark colors or gradients. This happens both on Xorg and Wayland but only when using the proprietary Nvidia drivers (or nvidia-open). The issue appeared a couple of months ago after an update.

It is very difficult to demonstrate, as it doesn't reproduce in screenshots. I tried taking a photo of my screen, but the dots either blend together or get lost in the moiré pattern of individual pixels (depending on how far away I hold the phone).

I don't really know how to troubleshoot this and would appreciate any pointers.

nvidia-settings, dithering? (it's in the output settings, DVI-I-0 or HDMI0 or so)

@seth That was exactly it, thank you! Disabling dithering produces a very bad color banding, but setting the dithering mode to "temporal" seems to have fixed it.
