A steam game freezing causes systemd to kill steam entirely

Hello Arch

I use steam for lots of different apps and games, so I usually have one or two things running from steam at once. Blender and Substance Painter seem to be big issues because whenever an operation takes a while or crashes it, systemd decides that it will kill steam entirely, killing every steam game/app open as well, which hugely disrupts my workflow. I checked the wiki pages for Steam, Steam/Troubleshooting, and Systemd, and didn't see anything that would help me.

This issue also happens when running VR, and when nothing is seemingly wrong systemd will kill steam for no apparent reason. If there's any way to tell it not to kill everything when one app running under steam freezes that would be fantastic!

ahh, yes... I have had memory issues in the past on an older install.
I have 16 GB of DDR4-3600 which was never a problem on Windows running lots of stuff at once. I could try making my swapfile larger perhaps.

As for the bonus question, I just find it nice to have steam managing blender versions and keeping it up to date. Though that's just more from my Windows days where I didn't have a fancy package manager lol. I do like steam's playtime counter though, but I could forgo steam to prevent at least one cause of that.

Would love some tips on how to circumvent this happened without buying more RAM. I do plan on getting more but for the meantime this is extremely disrupting! I understand that this is meant to save the system from crashing entirely but surely there's gotta be some workarounds. I'll try making my swapfile bigger for now, but would love some suggestions.

You have a total of 16 gig ram and some Adobe program uses 10. You have 8 gigs of swap. I'm not a Wine or Proton expert, but it looks like wine isn't properly swapping or not swapping fast enough.

Edit: Try the stock kernel. Always try the stock kernel, if things don't work.
