fbida can't find libungif

I'm sure this post belongs somewhere else, possibly not even in this forum, but I can't find where.  Sorry...

I'm trying to build fbida under ABS to remove the X dependencies (I've got a minimal system without X installed).  I have the latest libungif installed, but "make Make.config" reports

Checking for DGifOpenFileName in ungif...no

  I can't find anything wrong with the GNUmakefile.  I even found the string "DGifOpenFileName" in /usr/lib/libungif.a.  How can I get more info about what's going wrong?
