Hello,
I've installed Gdesklets and to make it work I had to do this work around in /opt/gnome/lib/desklets at the lines 61 and 62 because of the pyorbirt version:
( ("ORBit",), lambda m : m.__version__ >= (2, 0, 1),
_("ORBit python bindings (pyorbit) version >= 2.0.1 are required.")
Now the Gdeslets shell finally opens. But there is not a single desklet to choose and run. I've used Gdesklets in Ubuntu once and many desklets were installed with the main package. I've searched a gdesklets-data package or something but is does not exist. In the Gdesklets site the download links are broken.
Have someone any idea to fix this?

http://gdesklets.zencomputer.ca/ still hosts some desklets.
If you know that the ubuntu or another gdesklets package includes some desklets, you could try to just use that (with this tool for example).

I've used the PERL script you suggested to create a tar.gz file from this Ubuntu package: http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/x11/gdesklets-data .
Then I've unpacked the new file and put the data into my /home/~/.desklets directory. Now I have dozens of desklets available. Some don't work but most do. Thanks again.
