Make sure you are using the grub-gfx instead of the grub package and put the gzipped-Image Into your grub folder. Add this line to your grub.conf (Replace x and y with the correct numbers for your system):
splashimage=(hdx,y)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

Just to clarify it, this is a mockup (not yet done) for a usplash theme (shown while booting the system) while the original post in this thread was about a grub splash (shown while selecting the operating system to boot).
