Per default, controlling the mplayer volume means controlling the pcm volume. This means that every time I watch a video I basically mess with my system-wide volume.
Is there a way of giving mplayer its own, disconnected volume control?

Have you tried enabling the Software Mixer in the preferences?
To get something done, a committee should consist of no more than three persons, two of them absent.

Honestly, no, because I don't know how. The only reference to the mixer I can find in the config file is this
# Specify the mixer device.
mixer = /dev/mixer
And I have no idea what to change there to enable the software mixer.

In your ~/.mplayer/config file (create one if you don't already have one), add the line softvol=1

Or, using the gui, right click on the main window-->Preferences-->Audio-->check the option Enable Software Mixer
