[Solved] System hangs with hard reset required

Hi all,
first of all, thanks for taking the time to read this post. Secondly, I've been checking the forum for info regarding my problem but nothing seems to fit. Bits and pieces here and there but eventually, nothing related to what I'm currently suffering (at least, what I can deduce from the journalctl logs).

My problem is that, randomly, my machine freezes in place. Sound loops (~ 2 seconds audio) and no input is possible. No flashing keys on the keyboard , no nothing. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button.

Here are some logs:

* jounalctl -b -1
* Xorg.8.log

currently running the following kernel

Linux archwork 6.1.19-1-lts

with nvidia + intel hardware (graphic cards) and the following packages to handle them:

» pacman -Qs intel 130 ↵

Re: [Solved] System hangs with hard reset required

Since you posted the Xorg.8.log, is this strictly related to the nvidia invocation through bumblebee?
The journal doesn't show the nvidia module being loaded at all and the .8.log is from

Tue Jul 5 09:30:18 2022

Ftr, that's a turing chip, so you could just use PRIME and even benefit from the the chips ability to fully power down when unused, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME#NVIDIA

Otherwise https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … _CPUsmight be relevant and certainly get rid of xf86-video-intel first and foremost

grep -ri intel /{etc,usr/share}/X11/xorg.conf*

to make sure that nothign references it.

Getting rid of the

xf86-video-intel

driver made my system not boot at all (using xinitrc).
I think this is the correct log for when I booted without the intel driver installed

As per documented in the post you linked, i tried adding a simple xorg configuration as the following:

Edit: To try this out, 'pacman -R xf86-video-intel' and also remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf if you have it. Then reboot, the modesetting DDX will be loaded up instead. No need to mess up with mkinitcpio.conf or the i915 kernel driver, this has nothing to do with it.

did not work for me but all I got was a system hang. Any ideas on how to continue debugging or where to look for other probable errors/problems?

Re: [Solved] System hangs with hard reset required

I think this is the correct log for when I booted without the intel driver installed

Since the intel driver is clearly loaded: nope.
Also the system will have booted, just X11 will have failed.

What's the output of

grep -ri intel /{etc,usr/share}/X11/xorg.conf*

As per documented in the post you linked, i tried adding a simple xorg

What configuration specifically did you add? Just referencing the modesetting driver?
This won't be necessary in proper cases and might not help if there's still a reference to the intel driver around.

Also, if you've still bumblebee/bbswitch installed the nvidia GPU will be unavailable.

=> post the log of the failing X11 start.

Now that I'm testing the Xorg config solution, it's:

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-modsetting.conf.no: Identifier "Intel Graphics"

This is the test config i added for my tests

Section "Device"
    #your device configuration
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "modesetting"
    BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

Not relying on nvidia as default gpu. That gpu will be specifically used for games (when I find time to play again) or graphical applications that need it.

This is what I got from my last boot/crash without the driver installed. I currently have two xorg log files which look basically identical. Creation timestamps look like the time i tested with and without the driver installed
Xorg.0.log (with the xf86 intel driver installed)
Xorg.0.log.old (without the xf86 intel driver installed)
journalctl -b -1 from first booted session after crash withoute intel driver

Hope some of this info helps

Re: [Solved] System hangs with hard reset required

Xorg.0.log.old (without the xf86 intel driver installed)

Nope.

What do you consider "gettign rid of xf86-video-intel"?
Try

pacman -Rs xf86-video-intel

Not relying on nvidia as default gpu. That gpu will be specifically used for games (when I find time to play again) or graphical applications that need it.

Yes, That's how PRIME works by default.
No bumblebee/bbswitch needed.
You'll be running on the intel chip and can "prime-run superturboturkeypuncher³" anytime you want.

Re: [Solved] System hangs with hard reset required

k, looks like bumblebee and its dependencies were causing some trouble (no idea how or why i had both bumblebee and prime  installed together). Now my system correctly boots and looking at the Xorg.0.log file I can see that the intel driver is not found and the modesetting driver is used instead.

I'll come back in a few days and notify if this solves my system freezes. In the mean time, thank you very much for your time and help

Re: [Solved] System hangs with hard reset required

Ok, all looks fine. System is now stable again. Now to find out why I can't resume from suspend (black screen) roll . Marking as solved for this issue
