Ok, this one is a pet pevee. On my new laptop, I was not able to adjust the screen brightness with the fn keys in Cinnamon; adjusting sound works fine. The kernel parameters
acpi_backlight=video
acpi_backlight=vendor
acpi_backlight=nativeshowed no effect, but writing a brightness value to
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightnessworks, as well as setting the value with light. By defining keyboard shortcuts I am now able to adjust the brightness by keyboard again, but the OSD notification won't show up. This is the corresponding notification when adjusting volume:

How do I get my damn OSD notifications back?
Edit: solved!
There were no keyboard shortcuts defined for "Decrease / Increase screen brightness" (the predefined actions) in the Cinnamon settings. By reassigning them to "Fn + F2" and "Fn + F3" respectively, everything works as expected and I got the OSD notifications back. I remember having a problem with brightness adjustment on my old laptop, from where I took all my dotfiles, so these were very likely the leftovers.D'oh! But thank you, little rubber duckies.
