cairo issues with gimp and heal-selection / resynthesizer

Hi everyone!

I recently noticed that the gimp plugin "heal-selection" is broken. This seems to be related to the cairo version. This is what I get

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py", line 853, in _run
    res = _interact(proc_name, params[1:])
  File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py", line 372, in _interact
    import gimpui
  File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpui.py", line 33, in <module>
    import gtk, gobject, gimp, gimpcolor
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py", line 40, in <module>
    from gtk import _gtk
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/cairo/__init__.py", line 1, in <module>
    from ._cairo import *  # noqa: F401,F403
ImportError: /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/cairo/_cairo.so: undefined symbol: cairo_tee_surface_index

Now, I've tried to find some info on how to treat this on the internet, and it seems that most sources suggest to just downgrade cairo from 1.23 to 1.22 for this type of error. While this is unsatisfactory, it also just doesn't work: downgrading cairo for the default (pyhton3) installation using pip seems to work easily, but doesn't affect gimp (as it's python2-based). Using `pip --python $(which python2)` complains about version incompatibilities, and the `python2-pip` package from the AUR fails to build.

I'm a bit confused how gimp retrieves its packages - does it really use the system-installed cairo version, or does it ship its own? How would I go about downgrading it? Or do people recommend going another way? Is there maybe some dev version of gimp that uses python3 to avoid this issue?
Or does everyone just accept that heal-selection is broken due to an incompatibility with the newest cairo version?

Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

Re: cairo issues with gimp and heal-selection / resynthesizer

Rebuild https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/python2-cairo against the new cairo. Also if you were to downgrade something you'd downgrade cairo, not the python bindings of cairo, but you probably don't want to do that since cairo is a dep of a lot of things.
