what r the kernel and nvidia driver versions/patches?

The latest! It was after the new kernel (2.6.19 or something) and new nvidia drivers but everytime I try to solve this problem I do an upgrade to the system so I have everything updated.

did u have any issues before the upgrade, that part's unclear...

I never had any issues, it's the first time

u say now 'nv' fails also? what r the errors from that...

No currently and at the beggining it never failed!
The thing is while I tried to solve this I at one time decided to install the drivers form nvidia.org but forgot to uninstall the nvidia-utils wich broke 'nv' driver as well.
But now 'nv' is fine! I uninstalled things properly, tried a few things and ended with the nvidia and nvidia-utils packages installed as they should be.

please don't post logs in the thread, pastebin them instead ...
