Hello Arch community,
I'm experiencing a couple of issues with my Arch setup using the GNOME desktop environment. I have tried various solutions, but I haven't been able to resolve them completely.
1. My desktop doesn't seem to connect to the ~/Desktop folder, and right-clicking on the desktop doesn't show all the options(only 3: change background, Display settings, settings) . I have tried resetting GNOME settings using "dconf reset -f /" , but it didn't resolve the issue.
2. the panel now showing up at all. when i hit the super key i can choose and search apps but it now showing when i exit the super key mode.
what i tried:
dconf reset -f /
reinstalled gnome and gnome-extra
reinstalled nvidia nvidia-utils
reinstall xorg and re enable gdm.
i also had a problem that my maximize button for any app but i mange to fix it using:
" gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout 'appmenu:minimize,maximize,close' "
i don't think it's related but maybe it is.
Here's some information about my system:
OS: Arch Linux x86_64
Host: ASUS TUF Dash F15 FX517ZM_FX517Z
Kernel: 6.1.24-1-lts
DE: GNOME 43.4
WM: Mutter
WM Theme: Adwaita

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile /
GPU: Intel Alder Lake-P GT1 [UHD Graphics]

By default Gnome has disabled desktop/desktop icons since Gnome 3 and the desktop was removed definitively in Gnome 3.28... If you want the Desktop back you need an extension that achieves that... maybe Desktop Icons NG or Desktop Icons: Neo
The panel (the dash in gnome lingo) not showing up is the default behavior since Gnome 40 (maybe before...)... As before you need an extension. Dash to dock is the one i use...
Go to https://extensions.gnome.org/ , search and install the extensions...
I don't know if you are coming from Ubuntu or the last time you used Gnome was a decade ago, but Arch provides a vanilla Gnome experience and the issues you are facing have 6-10 years...
Hoping this helped!
