I just loaded windows 11 onto a usb drive to install alongside my already running Arch Linux OS. I could not get the usb drive to boot into the windows installer (it just kept saying “press any key to continue” then would immediately go back to bios menu. Now after trying to troubleshoot that, I am unable to even boot back into my arch Linux drive.
I was going to install the windows os on an entirely separate HD.
The only settings I altered were the secure boot options in my bios. I changed the ‘OS type’ option to “Windows UEFI mode” and the ‘secure boot mode’ to “custom”. These have since been returned to their previous configuration.
I now cannot even get my usb drive (loaded with the arch linux install iso) to boot. This drive was not even in the computer when I was trouble shooting the windows install previously.
I restored all bios defaults and still nothing boots. Some setting must have been altered. I really am at a loss now…

what boot loader do you use for arch and how did you configure it ? if you use grub and didnt use the fallback option thats probably why you cant boot now since you removed the drive.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GRUB#D … _boot_path
if you dont use grub then give details please, as for windows not working you will have to ask on a windows support forum

I am using grub. I did not remove the drive that had the arch install on it.
So why can I not even run the usb drive with the arch installer on it now? I put that same usb drive (w/ installer) in another PC and it loads up normally.

As for configuring grub, I did so during my initial install of arch.

have you tried multiple usb ports, ive had machines in the past that wouldnt boot off a usb3 port but would boot fine off a usb2, although this is going back a while.
maybe try removing the cmos battery for a few minutes to fully clear any settings.
other than that you'll just have to use trial and error with bios settings till you figure it out.

I tried it all. Reinstalled the MB bios, reset the CMOS, tried other OS I had sitting on USB drives (ubuntu, etc) and nothing, it would just keep forwarding me to the same red screen secure boot screen.
I even dug out an old sata disc drive and loaded an old windows 10 cd-rom onto it just to get something to boot on this thing. And with this CD method I was able to get the "press any key to continue" screen to come up, and at which time I just spammed the enter key ceaselessly (when I tried not doing this same issue persisted). For whatever reason this allowed me to actually boot something. After installing Windows 10 (cuz why not at that point) in this roundabout way I then went and forced windows to reboot into bios by going into the system recovery settings menu. Then when back in the bios I again assigned my grub/arch drive the boot priority and it booted up like normal. I have no idea... The only other thing I changed in BIOS before it worked was the graphics input (i switched it from AUTO back to PEG). I really doubt having the graphics option set to AUTO would prevent the booting of 3 different options though. WTF? it seems some odd glitch on the motherboard settings getting stuck in secure boot mode? What a pain. Well anyways, I appreciate all the input you've shared.
At least now I have windows installed, albeit the wrong version.
