Hey guys I need some help with a very strange issue
Background: I just migrated an arch+cinnamon installation to a new motherboard. After fixing some problems regarding grub/drivers, I encountered a problem where applications were very slow to start.
For example opening a terminal and running alacritty, or nemo, the window would take 20 seconds or longer to appear. Eventually I narrowed it down to uninstalling snap and xdg-desktop-portal. That fixes launching from terminal. All ways good for a while.
Possibly related: After a couple of logins, the problem suddenly reappeared! This time in a different form,
I bound some keyboard shortcuts in cinnamon settings keyboard shorcuts, a special section called launchers, for terminal, firefox, home folder.
Somehow, cinnamon was hanging executing these shortcuts.
When I try to logout, I noticed a window popped up saying Cinnamon media keys unresponsive.
I noticed that other shortcuts where fine, so I rebound the same keys to custom shortcuts that just runs the terminal command directly to launch, for example: nemo. It worked, a bit puzzling, but no big deal.
Problem description: This worked for a while, then after a couple of reboots, it suddenly broke again! I check keyboard settings, and its as if I never changed them. This seemed very strange because my new keybindings seemed to survive shutdowns, but then sometimes don't. And they don't revert to defaults either, just to the same keyboard bindings I had before swapping to my new motherboard. For example, I created a custom shortcut that runs the command firefox on Super+f, it works alright, then after process described below, the shortcut disappears.
I'll test if its all dconf entries or just cinnamon when I get back home.
More info: Before motherboard swap, I swapped from laptop to pc, and exported cinnamon settings by dconf dump /org/cinnamon > file and dconf load, not sure if that broke something? Another thing I'm now using btrfs.
I found I can replicate the issue consistently by changing a keybinding, pressing shutdown, not entering my password when asked for it, and logging in again when cinnamon logs me out.
I'll see if I can use this to find some useful logs later.
