Laptop screen only starts if a external monitor is plugged in on boot

Hello, my laptop has 2 GPUS one dGPU and one iGPU (intel and Nvidia).
I am using optimus-manager to manage Nvidia optimus as with PRIME render offload my external monitor does not get recognised.
When the external monitor is plugged in, it all works fine but if I try to start the laptop without an external monitor plugged in , after entering my password in GDM the laptop screen goes black.
If I plug in an external monitor and then unplug it after reaching i3, the laptop screen works fine.
