I had a vanilla arch install with systemd-boot on a Dell XPS 15 9650 laptop. On top of that I had Hyprland/Waybar. I used Sddm-git as a display manager. Well, I screwed up the boot-loader and even after copious hints and instructions, I still could not get my laptop to boot. So, I made an .img of the root partition, installed arch again manually with systemd-boot, wrote the .img back to the / partition, mounted my install on a live iso to update fstab and then was able to boot the machine from a tty, and start Hyprland. But if I try to use the display managers Sddm, lightdm, I get a login loop. The TUI ly does not even run. The permissions are correct on my /home directory the kernels are up to date and obviously, since it is Wayland, the usual tricks one uses for X do not apply here. Here is my journalctl after a failed login.

lines 1-24I do not really care about the display manager, I am happy to start Hyprland from a tty but I am just wondering what the problem might be.

Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

journalctl -eu sddmis worthless?

Because ti removes all context and "-e" is really pointless here, ie. you googled that command somewhere.
SDDM starts, there seems no attempt to login from there at all?
But you're not adding nvidia_drm.modeset=1 and that means no wayland for you.

I added
nvidia_drm.modeset=1as in the wiki to systemd-boot, but this did not solve the problem. First I appended editor 1 to loader.conf to be able to edit from the boot menu. I still got the loop. So I did not see the point in making the change permanent by editing /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf which in fact, is not even present on my system. I am probably screwing something up because, as you point out. I basically just follow directions, without a good understanding of what is going on under the hood. BTW: I did not google the worthless command, I asked for help on a Hyprland forum.

cat /proc/cmdline to see whether it applied.
Then make sure to attempt to sart hyprland at least once from sddm and post an updated journal.
Edit: without it, hyprland will rather not work on the nvidia driver for pretty much sure.

I guess the parameter was applied because

The script /home/paul/.start-hypr-nvidia does not exist
Given that it's executed to run the session, that's kind of a [drumroll] problem.
No idea why this script is not on my system or why the abovementioned directory is not there either.
Because you didn't use this script this time, but still have the hyprland session service around on your cloned root partition and rely on it to have sddm start hyprland.
https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/hyprland/ comes w/ /usr/share/wayland-sessions/hyprland.desktop but you're (most likely)
Reading from "/usr/local/share/wayland-sessions/hyprland.desktop"Also nvidia_drm.modeset=1 …
Offline
OK, I get it. So, I have
❯ cat /usr/share/wayland-sessions/hyprland.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Hyprland
Comment=An intelligent dynamic tiling Wayland compositor
Exec=/home/paul/.start-hypr-nvidia
Type=Application⏎ So, if I place .start-hyp-nvidia in my home directory, it should work? If it does, I do not see the reason for the change in boot parameter, given that the "original" system did not use it. Also, why do I get the same loop issue when I disable sddm and replace it with lightdm?
Offline
Because lightdm will use the exact same /usr/local/share/wayland-sessions/hyprland.desktop leading it to the exact same non-existent script.
And for the last time: enable kms
Offline
Ugh yes, that makes sense.
So, I should add kms to the hooks array (as per the wiki):
cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
MODULES=(nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm)
BINARIES=()
FILES=()
HOOKS=(base systemd autodetect keyboard sd-vconsole modconf block filesystems fsck)and place .start-hypr-nvidia in my home directory, or in my .local/bin where i prefer to have it, and change the path in the desktop file.
I did these things and now it works. More importantly, I learned some new stuff today. Thanks for your time.

So, I should add kms to the hooks array (as per the wiki):
You want to have modesetting enabled for nvidia_drm, ie. the nvidia_drm.modeset=1 parameter.
Whether or not the module is loaed early only matters wrt. the display manager failing because systemd starts it before the GPU was initialized.
Offline
Yes, I get it. Very nice. Thanks again for your time.
