Hello there,
I have an XPS9500 with a turing GTX1650ti and I'm trying to setup the hybrid graphics, as specified in the wiki.
However, it seems like the GPU is eating up a lot more power than it should. Without the nvidia drivers installed, (I assume the dGPU is not used at all then) I'm getting my power usage down to about 4W, but with the hybrid graphics enable, is always around 14W, even when not running anything on the dedicated GPU.
When querying the power state, I always get D0.
I tried a couple of options, envycontrol, some xorg.conf settings, the udev rules as specfied in the wiki, all making no difference and I must say I am a little confused now when it comes to setting up hybrid graphics.
Maybe somebody can point me into the right direction.
Thanks!

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
Did you check the state or do you go by the global power consumption only?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME# … Management
I assume the dGPU is not used at all then
Post a journal from such boot, but you should™ be using prime on the nouveau module.

Thanks for the quick response!

[ 673.761] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Logitech Wireless Mouse MX Master 3" (type: KEYBOARD, id 18)I'm using dinit, so I unfortunately, I don't have a journal like that, or I'm missing something.
I did a check on the state, and it always says D0, which corresponds to the higher power usage.
I have the proprietary driver installed, and with my hardware, I thought that the power management should work out of the box, but maybe I got confused by the wiki a little bit...

Check the second link, ampere defaults to rtd3, for turing you'll have to enable it.
Also pay attention to the CPU/IGP requirements, but you've a comet lake, so that should not be a problem.

Ah, I got it!
I used envycontrol for setting up the udev and modprobe rules, however it's hard to verify whether they are actually working.
When querying
/proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0000:01:00.0/powerI get:
Runtime D3 status: Disabled by default .
Does that mean, that my GPU does not even support runtime D3 power management?

I used envycontrol for setting up the udev and modprobe rule
And are they in place?
If you added the nvidia modules to the initramfs you'll also have to rebuild that to include the modprobe config, otherwise the module parameter won't apply.
cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/controlOnline
They are indeed in place.
Do I need to modprobe the nvidia modules / add them to mkinitcpio config?
cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/controlgives:

Do I need to modprobe the nvidia modules / add them to mkinitcpio config?
You need to load the module w/ "NVreg_DynamicPowerManagement=0x02", you can do this at the kernel commandline ("nvidia.NVreg_DynamicPowerManagement=0x02") or w/ a modprobe configlet.
If you do the latter, the configlet must be ready when the module is loaded, so if the module is loaded w/ the initramfs, the configlet must be in the initramfs and that means you've to rebuild the initramfs
sudo lsinitcpio /boot/initramfs-linux.img | grep nvidiaThe power control value is correct, so the udev rule fires.

Alright, so I "gave up" and reinstalled the whole system. Following the instruction one by one, installing nvidia-dkms, envycontrol and rebuilding the initramfs, it seems to be working now.
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0000:01:00.0/power returning
Runtime D3 status: Enabled (fine-grained)However, something else happened.
Envycrontrol also put
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 into the modprobe configlet, which resulted in the system not being able to sleep.
This is what shows up in dmesg:
[ 6848.245450] NVRM: GPU 0000:01:00.0: PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations module parameter is set. System Power Management attempted without driver procfs suspend interface. Please refer to the 'Configuring Power Management Support' section in the driver README.

[Edit]
So after deleting the options line, sleep now works again
[Edit]
Found the relevant documentation here: here .
Seems to be a problem with not having systemd indeed.
I'll see what else I can find out.

" options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1" isn't relevant for the RTD3 situation and no, what won't work w/o systemd and
Do you know why it is auto generated?
because you're using envcontrol instead of the arch wiki ![]()
