I noticed recently that Youtube offers a setting to always prefer AV1 so I enabled it. My PC is an AMD Ryzen 75800X CPU and an AMD 6700XT. Trying to play any AV1 video is a mess, the "stats for nerds" nearly half of the frames are dropped. If I disable AV1 either in the Youtube settings or with the Firefox about:config flag the video loads using VP9 and plays fine with 0 dropped frames. Firefox apparently supports hardware acceleration and the GPU should be powerful enough, and vainfo lists an entry for VAProfileAV1Profile0 : VAEntrypointVLD . The driver version is Mesa Gallium driver 23.1.3, all packages on the system are up to date. Is there anything else I can try to improve performance? If i uncheck "Use hardware acceleration when available" in the Firefox settings the videos play fine but of course it isn't using the GPU. I have been testing using this video but selecting "4K" since I only have a 4K screen. Selecting 8K is even worse.
Is there anything else I can try to improve performance? Thanks.
