[SOLVED] Modesetting driver causes multiple cursors

Hi, I'm running a laptop with a 12th gen Intel CPU, I'm using modesetting driver for graphics.

After some time of using the laptop, xorg stutters and creates a second cursor, this cursor stays in place and changes glyph to whatever the real cursor currently is.

When this happens, the screen on which the secondary cursor is cannot be turned off using xrandr (this actually causes all screens to go dark)

Any idea what I could do to fix this?

Side-note - "TearFree" option doesn't work for me, but right now that's the least of my concerns.

Fishing for more information.  What Desktop Environment / Window Manager are you using?
Are you using a compositor?

Re: [SOLVED] Modesetting driver causes multiple cursors

Also: is this a hybrid graphics system? What is "the screen on which the secondary cursor is"?
Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

It's an intel-only system.

I meant the monitor on which the cursor is, sorry I forgot that in xorg monitor and screen are 2 completely different things.

Fishing for more information.  What Desktop Environment / Window Manager are you using?
Are you using a compositor?

I'm running bspwm, I tried with and without compositor (picom) and the results were the same. I also tried booting into Gnome on Wayland and there after a few minutes the screen froze.

Re: [SOLVED] Modesetting driver causes multiple cursors

I got the "screen" thing, but the xorg log shows only the internal output eDP-1 and I wondered whether the problematic output was maybe sth. like https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/DisplayLink
I suspect

[ 21.859] (II) modeset(0): Display is continuous-frequency

is a problem…

[ 194.372] (EE) modeset(0): Failed to set CTM property: -13

Output of

xrandr --props

?

Re: [SOLVED] Modesetting driver causes multiple cursors

Sorry, the xorg log I posted was on a single display as I didn't have access to the monitors anymore. The problem persisted on single display, so I thought the log is good enough

xrandr --props

shows this for the built-in display:

However, I think I fixed the issue

I switched from gdm to sddm. This caused the x server to start with root privileges (gdm launched xserver using the user that logged in) and the problem disappeared!

Yes, but the second part would have been relevant information.

Not sure whether the root condition is relevant, but certainly see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GDM#Use_Xorg_backend
