XFCE - Pulseaudio - Display Port - audio works only with video

I have a monitor with speakers, and it is connected via display port.
If I play a video file with mpv, vlc, emby or youtube - all is fine, and I can hear the sound.
If I try to play an audio only file with the same programs or with mpd/cantata (be it flac, mp3, anything) I have absolutely no audio.
If I connect my bluetooth amplifier, I do have sound.

I have no idea what's going on - what can I do to investigate this?
