i'm having an issue where whenever i start capturing some games they become incredibly stuttery. mangohud shows the expected framerate, it seems to just stutter a lot to the point that it just seems to be running in an absurdly lower framerate.
on discord, it happens with regular discord (discord_arch_electron 0.0.28-1) and discord-screenaudio (discord-screenaudio 1.8.1-1) and the issues are immediately noticeable whenever i start streaming any game.
when i record using obs (obs-studio 29.1.3-1), Screen Capture (XSHM) has this issue and Window Capture (Xcomposite) does not (of course i get lower framerates, but not an absurd stuttering).
it seems to only happen in some 3d games?
here are some examples (✅ if the issue is happening)
✅ prey (heroic-games-launcher-bin 2.9.1-2 - lutris-GE-Proton8-13-x86_64)
✅ satisfactory (steam 1.0.0.78-1 - proton-ge-custom-bin 1:GE_Proton8_11-1)
✅ kingdoms and castles (steam 1.0.0.78-1 - native)
❌ overwatch 2 (lutris 0.5.13-5 - lutris-GE-Proton8-13-x86_64)
❌ minecraft (jdk17-graalvm-ee-bin 23.0.0-1)
here's some setup information:
xorg-server 21.1.8-2
nvidia 535.98-2
xfwm4 4.18.0-1
i first thought it was an issue with wine but i've noticed it with native games as well.
my main thoughts are as follows:
stutters are caused when gpu usage gets too high.
stutters are caused whenever a frame gets fetched (?), since if i stream on discord at 15fps the stutters are noticeably lower.
i'm looking forward to getting help diagnosing this issue. thanks!
