AMD GPU crashing [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0

I'm getting a crash with image corruption/artifacts while playing AOE IV (Steam/Xwayland) after a few minutes. Closing hyprland (win+M) usually works after a while. Tried a few things (boot flag amdgpu.aspm=0; echo high > /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level) but nothing worked. It happens with both LTS and ZEN kernels (up-to-date). The system is a ryzen 5700X with a radeon 5700XT GPU running Hyprland on the open source drivers. I recently changed the PC case for better ventilation and installed a new system on a new NVME ssd. It was stable (no crashes) before all that, but now I wonder if I might have caused some hardware issue while moving everything to the new case, or if it is something that emerged with the latest updates (because as I said it is also a new install). I just tried the game on a fresh win11 install and it ran fine for hours (linux crashes after a few minutes, always less than half hour), so I'm ruling out hardware issues...

[b]dmesg[/b] (highlighted the crash)

I took the liberty of changing your quote tags to code tags.  Can't help with the AMD GPU.  Sorry.

try adding

amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10

to your kernel cmd line.

Unfortunately that had no effect, it still crashes. I also disabled VRR. I think the main problem/error is:

[drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout, signaled seq=410345, emitted seq=410347
[drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* Process information: process RelicCardinal.e pid 3845 thread RelicCardinal.e pid 3845
amdgpu 0000:0f:00.0: amdgpu: GPU reset begin!

I did search for this error and found some similar cases but they all seem to be solved long ago with kernel updates...

Unfortunately I am still getting the "[drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout" when trying to play this game, even with current kernel etc. It does not appear to be a hardware problem.

I do not have X11 installed so didn't try that, but I did try reinstalling steam and the game with no change. Do you think installing X (obviously with a different WM) could make a difference?

Re: AMD GPU crashing [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0

A few years ago the xwayland code was split off from X to a separate branch with its own developers.

There is a possibility your error is in xwayland but not in xorg- If both show the issue we'll know the cause is on a lower level  then x/xwayland .

I do not have X11 installed so didn't try that,

You may not have a X windowmanager installed, but if you have mesa then you have X installed .

just try running with  a simple X wm like twm or openbox.

Re: AMD GPU crashing [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0

I know this is an old thread, but curious if you ever got it resolved?

I have the same issue on my 5700xt with aoe4

[drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout, signaled seq=5663456, emitted seq=5663458
[drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* Process information: process RelicCardinal.e pid 541026 thread RelicCardinal.e pid 541026
...
[drm] Skip scheduling IBs!
etc.

For me the cause was my undervolt, I was able to reproduce crashes consistently on both 6.1 LTS kernel and 6.6x series.

For now the only way I can resolve it is to completely disable clock/volt adjustments.

Unfortunately I am still having the crash, even without any clock/voltage adjustment. I did not try overclocking or overvolting as I'd rather not risk it, but it's certainly not caused by undervolting for me...

AoEIV itself is actually prone to triggering crashes if you use higher quality graphics settings. Can you reproduce this anywhere else?

I have not been able to reproduce my undervolt crashes anywhere else, though I've only played GTA5 and CS2 recently, but a few hours each without any issue.

I know the undervolting seems to constantly break between various kernel releases, and others have reported issues on the 6.6 series, like here https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/3084.

Though I was able to repeat the aoe4 crash in 6.1 kernel as well.

I run high settings on my 5700xt, not sure if OP has tested on different settings to see if that helps. Since disabling my undervolt I've played quite a bit more without any crashes at high settings on 6.6.9.

Re: AMD GPU crashing [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0

And there it is! My first crash with zero clock/volt adjustments.

I had the same dmesg errors as before.

If you're interested I was playing a mod map with a stupid number of units; often this results in a lot of late game stutter, and in a few cases performance crashes to a point where its unplayable.
So I think we can just say this game is broken and cursed on amd.

So far it only happened in AOEIV. I don't play that many games, but Anno 1800, GTA V and a few others have been very stable. AOEIV itself was (apparently) stable when I started playing it (soon after launch), but I didn't investigate enough to see what could be the change that started crashing it (new game patch, kernel 6+, wayland, etc)...

Re: AMD GPU crashing [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0

Okay I have a new theory.

Like yourself (LuxFerre) I've only experienced this crash in AOE.
However they seem to have come and gone over time, either thru kernel updates, or I'm guessing more recently game updates.

Regardless I have now fixed this for myself once again!

After experiencing crashes without any volt/clock changes at all I went back to see if my earlier assumption about any volt/clock changes was causing the issue.
I have since made changes with a much less aggressive undervolt and left my minor underclock.
Since then I have had zero crashes after several games and hours on AOE4.

My stock (factory gigabyte gaming OC) 5700xt clocks/volts are

/sys/class/drm/card1/device/pp_od_clk_voltage
OD_VDDC_CURVE:
2: 2095MHz 1205mV

My settings now

2: 1900MHz 1100mV

With this setting everything has been stable. I have a feeling the factory card might have slightly too aggressive OC. After searching what volts others were using there were a small number complaining they had to underclock to fix stability issues on their stock cards. Perhaps the 5700xt was really just that cursed.

I know you mentioned you were running stock, but I would be very curious to see if you applied just an underclock, say -200mhz, to see if it made any difference.
Also if you could confirm what your stock voltages are, perhaps they are too low? What model card do you have?

You can use a few GUI tools to adjust the settings, or you can just run something like this

CARD=card1
BOOST=1900 VOLTS=1100
echo s 1 $BOOST > /sys/class/drm/$CARD/device/pp_od_clk_voltage
echo vc 2 $BOOST $VOLTS > /sys/class/drm/$CARD/device/pp_od_clk_voltage
echo c > /sys/class/drm/$CARD/device/pp_od_clk_voltage

You will also need to add this kernel boot param,

amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xfffd7fff

Re: AMD GPU crashing [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0

Thank you for the detailed reply! My (stock - Sapphire) parameters:
OD_VDDC_CURVE:
0: 800MHz 717mV
1: 1419MHz 810mV
2: 2039MHz 1189mV

Now I tried with the values you suggested and the game won't start, but it could be something with the latest update (I updated just before launching, I create a game, it loads, but when I click Play after loading nothing happens and the GPU fans spin down, without any crash, it just sits waiting)... Gonna have to do some more digging...

Please don't fullquote posts (in general) but especially not if it's immediately preceeding your answer

I had that "in general" (but with street fighter 6) yesterday seemed to be a steam bug, got resolved by restarting steam.

@V1del
Fixed the quote.

Edit: it worked with a different (latest) proton version. Seems stable with the undervolt/underclock mentioned above!

Spoke too soon, still having the same crash with the underclock/undervolt.

Re: AMD GPU crashing [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0

I had meant to just apply the underclock only, my figures were just a point of reference for what my card can do in AOE4.

I've played several more hours and it's still fully stable for me.

Raise your voltage back to stock, and lower your clock to 1800mhz just as a sanity test.
If that works, then you can then slowly raise mhz until it becomes unstable again to find the fastest you can run it.

Likewise if you want to undervolt once you find a stable point, you just slowly lower voltage. But given the problems you're having I wouldn't bother trying to undervolt if you get it stable.
