Hi, under a time pressure I deleted two original FAT32 partitions on my USB flash disc. The disc is recognized by my 32bit Arch system as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, but parted fails in detection of these devices. There is a correct mountpoint for sdb and sdc in fstab. The goal before deletion of the original partitions was to merge them into a single one. Any advice? Thanks a lot!

The disk will be recognised as either sdb or sdc - not both. Check dmesg after plugging it in to find the device name.
Once you have, you can go ahead with parted.

tomk: It CAN be detected as both, but the chance is not big though. I had a stick here some time ago which created /dev/sdc as well as something tricky like /dev/ncd0 (don't remember the exact name). It was some protected drive which could only be removed with a special windows tool.
pjezek: Is it a stick with an U3 logo on it? they are rather (in)famous for this kind of protection.

Fair enough, mouse256, but what I said was that a device will not be recognised as both sdb and sdc - that is simply not possible.

../dev/sdc as well as something tricky like /dev/ncd0..
if you check the files, u'll note that at least one is a symlink..
chck
ls -l /dev/cdromfor example

Tomk: yeah that's possible. I thought because it could be detected as sdc and something fishy it also could be detected as sdc and sdd for example, my fault
Noriko: it actually wasn't a symlink, it was really a separate device.
