Hi there, I bought an Akai Professional MK249 off of ebay for the purpose of making music in Ardour. The last midi keyboard I had would just show up under qjackctl as soon as I'd plug it in. That does not appear to be the case with this one.
It's powered on, and I have it set to the preset MidiOut.

(in summary, the same devices)
I've got everything up to date on my laptop, per pacman -Syu, I've tried it with every USB port on my laptop in case it's a bad USB port, and I've tried it on my other laptop that also has Arch on it (main laptop is a Thinkpad W520, spare is an X201). Same results.
Did I buy a device that's poorly supported? Is it defective? Am I missing something simple? Are there other diagnostics I could run? I could use some help. If possible, I'd really like to get this working and use it for music stuff. Thanks!

Oh, forgot to mention, I also tried watching the kernel messages, with sudo dmesg -w, and there are neither any messages when plugging it in nor when removing it, which is strange.

If you get nothing at all on dmesg nor on lsusb then the usb connection is dead. Check whether the port works with anything else, whether the cable works with anything else and then whether there's some switch on the device to enable usb out. Otherwise you have to assume the device is defective. If it responded at all on the USB bus you'd see something, even on devices that don't technically have a driver.

Dang, that's what I was afraid of. Yeah, I've used the same USB cable/USB port with my audio interface and that works fine, so I guess it has to be the port on the midi keyboard. Man, that sucks. Thanks for the help, anyways.
