Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

Hello,

I use GNOME with Wayland, and I have set keyboard shortcut in Gnome settings for mute / unmute microphone and I set Pause keyboard button for it, in my X11 session it works as intended, if I press it it will unmute, if I press it it will mute it, and so on, but problem is that in Wayland it do nothing, it will just show GNOME microphone popup but it will not change a state it remains muted or unmuted, by the way I use pipewire.

I use several linux distros like: Archlinux, Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

You are triggering what on which keyboard shortcut? What happens if you set it again?

I set it here: https://imgur.com/a/bV1ESZk

I tried to remove it, and set it again and still same behavior, just UI popup shows up, but it will not change state.

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

Still issue sad

if sou set mute mic to some keyboard button like Pause, it will do nothing it just popups mic volume on the bottom of screen without mutting / unmutting

even when I run `amixer set Capture toggle` it still stays at max volume.

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

Since gnome's pretty tied to gstreamer for most of this stuff, is gst-plugin-pipewire installed?

Also sanity check:

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
systemctl --user status pipewire{,-pulse} wireplumber pulseaudio
pactl list sinks

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

Here is whole output: https://pastebin.com/raw/jzNv5PsB

I use pipewire btw, and here is screencast of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WfaewkADog even when Im clicking on mute button in gnome settings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WfaewkADog

but under X11 no issues

EDIT:

uploaded another video showing amixer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPMooCkuKC4

as you can see issue is that it sometimes toggles, but it is not reliable, most of times it keeps value not changed

EDIT2:

commands

pactl set-source-mute @DEFAULT_SOURCE@ toggle
amixer -qD default sset 'Capture' toggle

didnt help, same behavior as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPMooCkuKC4

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

@V1del any ideas? hmm

I found out new thing, I tried to change DE in GDM during login to "Weston" I launched terminal and spammed few times "amixer set Capture toggle" and it works just fine under Weston, and as far as I know Weston is Wayland compositor, so:

GNOME on X11 works
GNOME on Wayland doesnt work
Weston works

EDIT:

It happens on fresh installation too sad

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

Found new thing:

As sound card I use external USB sound card Sound Blaster Play! 2, now I tried regular internal sound card on motherboard and it works just fine, problem is with that combo GNOME + Wayland + Soundblaster, but I want to use that external sound card, because it has much better noise cancellation out of box + better quality.

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

Soundblasters are generally a shitfest and they don't conform to standards from a driver/software perspective.

What controls are even exposed. Can you post

arecord -lL
amixer -c0 #Make that correspond to the index listed in arecord for the troublesome card
pactl list source
sudo dmesg | grep snd_usb

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

Can you still control the output volume in a wayland session?

Does

problem is with that combo GNOME + Wayland + Soundblaster

change anything about

"amixer set Capture toggle"
GNOME on X11 works
GNOME on Wayland doesnt work
Weston works

(ie. did you test the SB in all scenarios)?

Yes I was testing Soundblaster in all these scenarios:

"amixer set Capture toggle"
GNOME on X11 works
GNOME on Wayland doesnt work
Weston works

I have second USB external sound card which is called just "USB Audio Device" it is just some generic cheap sound card, and that works everyfine just fine, but I would like to make working that SOundblaster, because it has little bit better quality imho.

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

The thing is, you should absolutely not rely on amixer when running on pipewire/pulseaudio to hit the correct device with a "blind" "amixer set Capture toggle", in fact the correct amixer on the underlying card shows that a Capture control is not even a concept for the soundblaster card.

How do

pactl set-source-mute alsa_input.usb-Creative_Technology_Ltd_Sound_Blaster_Play__2_000000008582-00.analog-stereo toggle
#alternatively if the above doesn't work for some reason
amixer -c5 set Mic,0 toggle

behave?

Tried both commands, still same behavior hmm

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

Are you sure your stuff is recording from the correct device? When "not working" while actively recording what do you get from

pactl list sources
pactl list source-inputs

and how do the outputs of the first commands change in reaction to the set-source-mute command?

source-inputs is not valid argument

pactl list source-inputs
Specify nothing, or one of: modules, sinks, sources, sink-inputs, source-outputs, clients, samples, cards, message-handlers

I use several linux distros like: Archlinux, Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

Argh, source-outputs during an active recording of course.

But according to

Source #91
	State: SUSPENDED
	Name: alsa_input.usb-Creative_Technology_Ltd_Sound_Blaster_Play__2_000000008582-00.analog-stereo

you were not actively recording from the device in question when running the sources command. How exactly are you recording what and determining that the toggle doesn't work?

Re: Mute/unmute mic doesnt work in Wayland

Isn't the most weird part the gnome/wayland condition?
Has this been an issue w/ gnome 46 and is it still w/ gnome 47?

It happens on fresh installation too

Fresh *installation* or fresh *user*?
If you re-installed the system but kept your $HOME, that doesn't tell much.
Create a dummy user and log in as that into a gnome/wayland session and test the behavior.
