Plasma X11 black screen with cursor only

Hello all, haven't tried many desktop environments before so I tried installing plasma and the additional applications.  When I run 'sddm' I get the entrance screen with my username and enter the password with no problems - Plasma (X11) is pre-selected in the top corner of the screen - but after the login phase I only see a black desktop with cursor.  Graphic interface is running as I can see and move the cursor around, but no environment

Not sure where to begin so just let me know what logs are needed and I will be happy to provide them

Try to suspend the compositor (SHIFT+Alt+F12) and then start w/ the system journal and xorg log.
You could also try to head over to a different TTY, login and try to run

xterm -display :0 # obviously install xterm first

and see whether that shows up in your black plasma session.
If so and suspending the compositor doesn't show your desktop, check whether it has a window decoration (titlebar etc.) and you can also use it to run "startplasma-x11" and see whether you get any error messages from that.
