[SOLVED] Non-native display resolutions are unusable and glitchy

Long-time listener, first-time caller. I'm having trouble changing the resolution on my P15v G3 (AMD) Thinkpad running Plasma.

Issue: When changing from my laptop's native resolution (via xrandr or Plasma's Display Configuration) I get a mess of glitches/nonsense. I've uploaded a video of this to YouTube.

Relevant Post: I've found something similar on the forums here, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=279912. This user's question was in the context of gaming, but the video demonstrates the same behavior.

Background: I've owned this laptop for 3 months, and originally ran Plasma with Wayland. Some time later this issue popped up. I spun up a Ubuntu Live CD and confirmed that my monitor is working correctly, and should be able to display resolutions other than 3840x2160 @ 60Hz. I did some fiddling around, and settled on abandoning Wayland to go back to X, this solved my problems. For a month or two I had no issues using Plasma with X. I could change my resolution freely without problems. This issue has since returned, and I'm at a loss. I take this laptop to campus for research meetings and need to be able to project my screen (and thus duplicate my display in Plasma at 1920x1080 or other standard resolutions).

What have I done: I have followed 4.2 Adding Undetected Resolutions from https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/xrandr (the video above is me using such a custom resolution to no avail).

Thoughts: This machine has an iGPU and dGPU. I *think* my drivers are set up correctly, but reading through the forum post above it appears not to be a driver issue.

Just now tried reinstalling mesa and xf86-video-amdgpu (which were both up to date), restarted Plasma, and still no dice.

Can you post your 'dmesg' output and have you tried with an older kernel?

[     8.142] (==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"

What is the output of ls -l /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d ?

Please post also contents of /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and journal or dmesg  (as root) from current boot.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building to complicated ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Ask, and you shall receive!

Thanks to all who replied, swapping to the LTS kernel fixed this bug.

Re: [SOLVED] Non-native display resolutions are unusable and glitchy

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

You might want to subscribe to the other thread, at some point the current kernel will become LTS and you want that problem addressed by then.
It's "long time support", not "long time solution" tongue
