pulseaudio: headphone output is heard through speakers as well

On startup, the Headphones channel shows as muted in alsamixer, and Speakers is unmuted - regardless of whether or not the headphones are plugged into the audio jack.

When I mute Speakers, nothing is heard through the headphones either.

Plugging/unplugging headphones does not affect this.

This is a new laptop on which I'm setting up sound for the first time. I have -
- alsa-utils
- sof-firmware, alsa-firmware
- jack2 (needed by other programs)
- pulseaudio
I had previously tried to get pipewire working but had too many issues, so I uninstalled it.

Some details that might be relevant -

- pavucontrol shows the Speaker output as 'sof-hda-dsp Speaker+Headphones':

I can switch that dropdown to 'Headphones (unplugged)'; when I do, I see that Speakers has been muted in alsamixer. Same as if I'd done it through alsamixer, as described above.

> amixer -c 0 contents

Output: http://ix.io/4Iiw
(doesn't change whether or not headphones are connected; I've checked with diff)

> sudo alsa-info.sh

Output: http://ix.io/4Iiy

Failure: Module initialization failed

Based on the above amixer output, perhaps pulseaudio can't detect my headphones being plugged in... in this case it's not a hardware issue, because I dual-booted with Windows, which can detect the headphones being plugged in just fine.

I've also tried 'modprobe snd_hda_intel' to no avail.

Any ideas? At the very least, I'd like to be able to manually switch between speaker and headphone output...
