Periodic hitching/freezing on GNOME Wayland

Finding any DE/Compositor on either X11 or Wayland that plays nicely with the hardware in my system has been a complete nightmare, but the new GNOME 45 update has gotten very close, minus one very annoying issue.

Once every one or two minutes or so (i haven't actually been timing it so don't take that as concrete), the entire screen will just freeze for like half a second at most. This happens regardless of what I'm doing, it literally just happened while typing this line, but it seems to happen more often when I'm doing more intensive tasks such as gaming. As far as i can tell, it's not just a visual freeze either. I can tell that when the screen stutters, every program that's rendering to the display also has its rendering freeze. Easiest way I've been able to tell this is because the freezes show up on framerate counters and can cause audio desync in game cutscenes because the video freezes but the audio does not. I can't quite tell if the freezes are caused by CPU or GPU usage spikes or in which process they would be, because the freezing display makes it difficult to tell. I would probably have to try monitoring usage over ssh from another system. The freezes also cause keyboard inputs to be repeated, causing some stuff to be typed like thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis.

This computer is an NVIDIA laptop, so it has two GPUs. One is a Intel TigerLake-H GT1 [UHD Graphics], and the other is an NVIDIA RTX 3060 Laptop GPU. All of my displays are connected directly to the iGPU via thunderbolt dock to avoid the countless problems that come with using the external GPU as a display on Wayland.

The only solution I've found for my hardware is this (https://community.frame.work/t/periodic … nux/3912/6) post on the framework forums, but it doesn't appear to have had much effect on my system.

Is there any way to fix this? It's very annoying because apart from this bug GNOME's Wayland compositor works flawlessly on this system, and is in fact the best working one I've found so far.

Try disabling RT threads on mutter by exporting MUTTER_DEBUG_KMS_THREAD_TYPE=user like in e.g. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=289733
