Epson L8180 + Digikam, dark photo printing

Hi, I got an Epson L8180 and installed `epson-inkjet-printer-escpr2` to drive it on cups. I am using Digikam as my photo manager. I am having real problems trying to match what I see in the monitor with what the printer outputs when printing photos. If I take a JPG that is seen perfectly on the monitor and I feed it to the Epson app on Android on my cell, and from there I print it, the print comes out perfect, just as I am seeing it on the monitor. If I print directly that same JPG from Digikam, the print is dark and lull. I have to edit the file heavily to add lightness artificially and saturate colors to the point that watching it on the monitor is uncomfortable and only trial and error like this until I get a right print. Which again, the cellphone will get it immediately right on the first try.

So my questions are:

1) what do I need to tweak on Digikam and/or cups to get a closer print to what the monitor shows?
2) Why does a closed sourced application on the cell gets this right as/is with one click?

I assume that either a) the driver from `epson-inkjet-printer-escpr2` just has the wrong color profile or something similar, or most probably b) the Epson app on android tweaks colors for the printer before sending it. Either way, I'd like to replicate this without needing to install Windows/Mac to run a native Epson software.
