Cannot import images to darktable

As in the title. Opening DT from either the CL or GUI icon, click on

 import > add to library

a random directory list appears in the pop up rather than the usual list of ~/Pictures/ subdirectories from the hard drive and the links and scroll bars are frozen.

From the CL I ran

 darktable -d all > darktable.log

and the output is here: http://0x0.st/HvGG.txt

I also looked at what systemd may produce. It registers that I opened darktable in one of its debug modes but nothing after I closed DT.

How can I improve my reporting on this? Can you see what the problem is and suggest a permanent fix?

<edit> I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in Applications & Desktop Environments -it seems to have a foot in each camp. Mods please move as appropriate if necessary. </edit>
