[SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

I have a laptop (Razer Blade 15 2021 w/ RTX 3070) that uses the dGPU to run SDDM when I'd rather use the iGPU. This keeps my dGPU on and consumes battery unecessarily

If I boot with an eGPU plugged in, it will use the iGPU as desired.

I'm guessing there's a race condition where SDDM is starting before the intel GPU has been able to setup. Is there a way I can configure SDDM to wait/depend on the intel GPU, but also allow it to start if there is in fact no intel GPU installed at all (i.e. drive moves to another PC)?

Thans

Try https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start for i915 and in doubt post your xorg log(s)

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

I'm not so certain loading-order is my issue anymore. It looks like modesetting and nvidia modules are loaded. I don't know why booting with an eGPU connected would affect it though.

I've spent a lot of time troubleshooting this, but I fear I lack some prerequisite knowledge. Incase someone's able to help, I've included my xorg log below

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

Please use [code][/code] tags. Edit your post in this regard.

You're running the i915 chip on the modesetting driver, the nvidia chip is available for prime offload.

The only weird thing is

[ 964.419] (WW) NVIDIA(G0): - Setting a mode on head 0 failed: Insufficient permissions

If you're concerned about the xorg process showing up in nvidia-smi, that's normal and doesn't mean the chip draws any power. Only that the process "occupies" the driver.
Ampére should also default to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME# … Management - do not run nvidia-smi when testing the power_state, it'll activate the chip to poll it.

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

Thanks, I wasn't sure what the formatting was for code.

I have a powerdraw metric running through polybar, so I know the GPU is drawing power without running nvidia-smi / nvtop, and I can see it not draw power if the laptop boots initially with the eGPU.

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

What "powerdraw metric" - do you *know* it's the GPU or just that *something's* drawing power (could be the iGPU, could be the eDP)
Please check the D3 runtime_status and runtime_suspended_time first.
Then check nvidia-smi to see whether some other process might generate side-load, "printenv" to see whether you globaly enabled DRI_PRIME

If none of that is the case but the D3 isn't "suspended", explicitly add udev rule and kernel parameter.

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

Polybar and powertop can read the draw from battery, so I was referencing that. I can see a noticable +10-20W draw over the expected draw when I disable the nvidia gpu by other less user friendly means.
It would appear that my D3 status is as follows, and doesn't seem to change. It's my understanding that should say suspended, not active.

Runtime D3 status: Enabled (fine-grained)

Admittedly, I am uncertain how to check runtime_suspended_time

printenv does not show any DRI_PRIME parameters (

printenv | grep DRI

returned no results)

I'll look into the udev rules as you suggested

Edit, found how to get the suspended time. It's not changing.

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

I've followed the guides here to add udev rules, and my D3 status is still active and suspended time is not incrementing consistently.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME# … er_offload

It looks like I may fall into this category of users:
"Some users with hybrid graphics are reporting that their discrete NVIDIA Ampere GPUs are failing to remain in the D3Cold power state after upgrading to newer NVIDIA drivers (seemingly >525) [1]."

My gpu goes from D3cold while on AC to D0 while on battery, as described in the bug report. I'm pretty sure that note wasn't on there last time I looked. I looked at the logs from when I connected the eGPU as well, and saw it was simply unmounting the nvidia devices because I didn't have "AllowEGPUS" turned on, so I'm guessing it was turning the gpu off... but only because it was unusable. Thanks for trying to help Seth.

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

You can get the (dkms version of) older driver versions from https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_Linux_Archive

But even if not completely powered down, 20W is WAY too much for an inactive GPU.
What does nvidia-smi report and what does your xorg log look like?
Probably also your system journal (all w/o the eGPU not not complicate the data)

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

On a hunch, I shut down my display manager (sddm) and ran the following to watch my gpu state

watch -n cat /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_state

What I saw was that on battery it would stay in D0, except about every 21-22 seconds it would go into D3hot -> D3cold for a moment then return to D0. Having killed the sddm service, I believe this means that my issue has nothing to do with sddm, xorg, wayland, kde, or other aspects of the graphical environment. The nvidia persistanced documentation says that the gpu enters D3cold once all processes have closed their connection to the gpu's device file. I'm not exactly certain which "file" that is, or if I can check what processes have it open, but I think that's the course forwards. Unless you have further insights @seth. I'm doing my best to take your feedback and not waste your time.

It's possible I'm misunderstanding this bit regarding the nvidia drivers, but this is the quote.
https://docs.nvidia.com/deploy/driver-p … index.html

On Linux systems running the NVIDIA GPU driver, clients attach a GPU by opening its device file. Conversely, the GPU is detached by closing the device file. The GPU state remains loaded in the driver whenever one or more clients have the device file open. Once all clients have closed the device file, the GPU state will be unloaded unless persistence mode is enabled.

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

I have driver persistence enabled, yes
As an experiment I tried disabling it while the dGPU was in various states: e.g. plugging in to ac to get D3cold and then disabling persistence and unplugging ac but the experimentation had no effect on my sleep states.

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

Did you test the behavior after rebooting w/ the persistenced disabled?
https://docs.nvidia.com/deploy/driver-p … tence-mode is certainly not enabled on top of that?

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

It would seam that the command

nvidia-smi -i <target gpu> -q

will report the persistence state for both the legacy and the new persist daemon, so it's not clear by the output of that command which version you are running. To know for sure I used combinations of disabling the nvidia-persistenced systemd service and the nvidia provided command

nvidia-smi -i <target gpu> -pm ENABLED

With those, I tested both legacy and new persistence methods (applying a reboot in-between) and found that neither affected the dGPU's sleep state.
I wish I knew what was significant about that 20s interval in which it does manage to enter D3cold on battery.

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

If the D3cold state was linked to a process attaching and deattaching to the gpu, then I thought iti may show up via this command

watch -n 1 lsof /dev/dri/card*

However, processes only seem to be attaching to /dev/dri/card0 which I believe to be the integrated gpu. Interestingly, the xorg process that appears in nvidia-smi does not appear here.
I don't know for sure that command will do what I want it to, but it was the best I could think up.

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

nvidia-smi should™ tell you what process uses what aspect of the GPU?
(It's not gonna power down, because nvidia-smi is polling it, but at least you can get that information)

The device nodes you're interested in are probably /dev/nvidia*

I wish I knew what was significant about that 20s interval in which it does manage to enter D3cold on battery.

Some status widget (conky and the likes)?

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

Ah yes, this output looks more like what I was looking for, thanks. It says Xwayland is attached to the dGPU, which is consistentish with nvidia-smi's output (which reports Xorg as an attached process, but I'm on wayland and using sddm on xorg ). Unfortunately, when unplugging and replugging the AC adapter there is no changes on the lsof output.

COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
Xwayland 1051 myuser 6u CHR 195,0 0t0 819 /dev/nvidia
Xwayland 1051 myuser 7u CHR 195,0 0t0 819 /dev/nvidia
Xwayland 1051 myuser 8u CHR 195,0 0t0 819 /dev/nvidia
Xwayland 1051 myuser 10u CHR 195,0 0t0 819 /dev/nvidia

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

Disable SDDM, remove xwayland and start your wayland session directly. Then see what process acts up b/c of the missing xwayland (browser? conky, some xrandr script?)
Alternatively you could run xrestop and see what processes show up there.

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

I took it one step and ran lsof in the TTY without any graphical environment. nvtop, nvidia-smi, and lsof all agreed that there were no process running on either gpu, however the 20 second D0 -> D3cold behavior remained.
sad

Re: [SOLVED] SDDM loads before iGPU / uses dGPU

On the bright side, it would appear that the turnoffgpu.sh script from https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hybrid_graphics works, it just has to be done manually. This can be a suitable work around until nvidia fixes the driver.

#!/bin/bash

usage="Usage: ./graphic_card [option] \nOPTION: \n- off \n- on"

if [ $# -ne 1 ]; then
    echo -e $usage
else
    if lsmod | grep -q acpi_call; then
	echo 'acpi_call found'
    else
	echo 'acpi_call found, importing it'
	sudo insmod /home/sush/dev/c/acpi_call/acpi_call.ko
    fi
    if [ $1 = 'on' ]; then
	echo '\_SB.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP._ON' > /proc/acpi/call
echo 'Discrete graphic card ENABLED !'
    elif [ $1 = 'off' ]; then
	echo '\_SB.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP._OFF' > /proc/acpi/call
echo 'Discrete graphic card DISABLED !'
    else
	echo -e $usage
    fi
fi

It would appear this comes at the cost of complicating the sleep/resume functionality though.
