Hi,
I'm having issues with my current setup.
When I have an external display (LG 4K display, connected via HDMI) plugged into my laptop, the laptop will, at some point, for sure, hang. This started happening after an update earlier this year, but I no longer know exactly when.
When the external display is not connected, this never happens. The computer survived about 60 days with no external display connected. Its current uptime is of 74 days, so I connected the display between one and two weeks ago.
The external display is above the laptop, and the resolution is either 3840x2160 or 2560x1440. Lately it's always been 2560x1440.
What happens is that, during the course of normal work, the system freezes. As long as the mouse remains on the external display, it continues to move normally, but it no longer interacts with any windows.
As soon as I try to move the mouse to the display below (eDP1), the mouse will then freeze as well, never leaving the display above (it freezes on the lower portion, near the border).
The system is then completely unresponsive to any input, but is still accessible via SSH, and via SSH it still works normally. I am able to collect any information I need.
Most times, when this happens, I can recover by disconnecting the HDMI port, waiting one second, reconnecting the HDMI port, and wait 10-30 seconds. It will most times recover and I can continue working.
Sometimes - it's happening right now - it freezes completely and seems to be unrecoverable. It's been 5 hours now.
When this happens, htop shows the CPU idling (0-5%), but the temperature increases drastically - 4.2 GHz, 97C, load increases steadily - first 1, then 2, 3, now (5 hours later) it's at 7.
I can't interact with Xorg. Any application that attempts to communicate with X (xrandr, inxi -G) will hang and I have to `~.` and start a new SSH session.
I tried to run "powertop", but it hung as well. So I started a new SSH session, ran `strace powertop`, and saw that it freezes on:
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness", O_RDONLY) = 3
read(3,Indeed, when I SSH again and cat this file, it also hangs:
$ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness
^C^C^C^C^C^CThis is happening frequently, and it often requires me to reboot my computer, so I'd like to ask for help to (1) troubleshoot this problem, and/or (2) find a way to recover the system when this happens, so I stop losing work.
Now, for the readouts (the kernel is Tainted because it's running OpenZFS):

eDP1 is the laptop display. HDMI-A-1 is the external display, consistent with "Made in: week 4 of 2022" (consistent with the sticker that says it was built on 04/2022, so LG likely puts in the month, not the week number, in the EDID field).
The weird part is that
[ 2269.633] (II) modeset(0): Allocate new frame buffer 2560x2520 strideand it shows up in xrandr despite there being no indication for a HDMI output in the log whatsoever.

Yes. I can switch monitor if you think that helps. I will do so as soon as I can.
Is "LG 4K display" a Tv?
No, it's an LG 32UN88A-W, "31.5" UltraFine™ UHD 4K Ergo IPS Monitor with USB Type-C™":
https://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/uhd-4k-5k/32un88a-w/
Even though it is fairly recent, it appears to have been discontinued. USB-C is not working, and I have since requested LG support under warranty, for which I am now waiting. I don't know if these problems are related.

I can switch monitor if you think that helps.
It would at least tell us whether the problem is specfic to the output or the attached monitor.
I'm a bit more suspicious about the cable, though. In part b/c of "USB-C is not working"
his is a plain hdmi/hdmi cable, no adapter? Can you attach the monitor via displayport? Is the DP input plain or USB-C modeswitching (or are there two)?
