My introduction to Arch Linux

Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself and let everyone know about my first impressions using Arch Linux (even though by reading these forums, i'm sure many are tired of the repetitive new user subject).

I've tried using linux off and on for the past 6 years but haven't had a great deal of success.  I started off with Slackware and while I liked the feeling of having a clean, stable distro I found it to be a chore to manually update and ended up messing up a lot of dependencies and so forth.  I then tried out distros that hid the real core of linux from you such as Mandrake and Suse.  My experiences with these distros was decent but I still didn't quite feel at home and ready to migrate all the way from using Windows.

Today was my first day of finally trying Arch Linux, and like many others i'm extremely impressed!  The install was very simple and I found the documentation to be adequate, although I did initially have some problems getting the right drivers for Xorg.  I absolutely love using pacman to update my system and keep it nice and clean, just the way I like it.  Right now i'm just finishing up adding some essential programs i'll need and i'm running KDE which i'm perfectly content with for now (I plan on switching to maybe fluxbox or the like later on).  Needless to say, I just wanted to thank all the developers and contributors of Arch Linux, i'm looking forward to finally staying away from Windows and finding a new home with Arch .

Welcome, if you wouldn't mind. Could you post what you felt lacked (if any) in the wiki? Was there a subject you searched with no results or a subject that didn't really have the information you needed? Thanks!

Arch is the best, and improving all the time.
I too, tried Linux on and off for a few years without much success. I too tried Suse and Mandrake and Ubuntu and like you, I found them uncomfortable and awkward. I was intimidated after my failures with all the "newbie" distros, and so I tried Debian, Slack and Gentoo, which all had some nice features, but a lot of negative ones as well. Then I found Arch, and like you, I found that it just fit like a glove.
I'm glad I found it last, because now I see how all the other distros have failed and I can truly appreciate all the things that the Arch developers have got right.  8)

Hi and welcome home @ Arch ;-)

... Right now i'm just finishing up adding some essential programs i'll need ...

I'd be interested what apps your are missing (as I'm sometimes looking for apps other people want to use - and from which I never heard of..)
Forgive me when I point you to things you probably already know, but I just have to mention two things anyway:

xabbot, I thought the wiki was well written and had a good amount of information pertaining to Arch Linux.  There wasn't a single problem that I encountered that I couldn't find info about in the wiki or the forums, which made for a pretty easy installation.
Sigi, the only apps that I added were gaim, VLC media player, bluefish, and firefox and they were extremely easy to find . I'm currently browsing through AUR to find more useful programs to use or just tinker with, thanks for the tip.

Arch is the third distro I have used extensively (well, I've had it installed a few days now), and I would have to say it's the best yet.

I use Gentoo on my muckaround/server box, I previously had Ubuntu 6.06 installed on my desktop, and now I have Arch. It's fast, it's easy to use, pacman is better than aptitude or portage, and best of all, IT'S FAST! i386? NO THANKS!

Very happy with Arch so far!
