VM will not boot with today's update

In terminal, I updated my Arch / Openbox install in VBox just now and the VM won't even boot (tried again - same result). It locks at a black screen with /dev/sda1. When I updated I saw maybe two packages one of which was Mesa. That stuck in my mind because yesterday's update and successive KMahjongg and I saw some blurb about Mesa being the problem however the game (Kmahjongg) ran. Well, I thought maybe the Mesa people are going to undo some mistake but it's worse.

So... just downgrade mesa then? Can you boot to a TTY by appending systemd.unit=multi-user.target as a kernel command line parameter from the bootloader? Or just boot from the live ISO with the virtual drive attached then chroot in.

The VM is booting btw, it just can't load the desktop.

Re: VM will not boot with today's update

Thanks for the comeback. I tried different TTY (Alt+F3 and Alt+F$) but the problem was that it would only stay for maybe two seconds and revert. By repeatedly Alt+F3-ing I managed to log in as root and try downgrading... well let me paste in my person notes of how it went. Short answer it didn't 'went'. I blew away the VM and I'm close to finishing the new one. So here's the paste in: (and thanks again)

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_L … cific_date

/dev/sda1: recovering journal
/dev/sda1 primary superblock features different from backup, check forced.
/dev/sda1: Feature orphan_present is set but orphan file is clean.
CLEARED.
/dev/sda1: 177814/1179648 files (0.2% non-contiguous), 2630852/4718592 blocks
_   (blinking cursor to left)

I have to Alt+F3 to get a different TTY and only have it for like 2 seconds to enter root for log in and then my password and it takes like seven Alt+F3 (s) to do all that since it's only available for a couple of seconds. Then I did the following to no avail:

To restore all packages to their version at a specific date use the following server directive:

nano /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Server=https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2023/12/30/$repo/os/$arch
Server=https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2023/12/29/$repo/os/$arch
Server=https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2023/12/28/$repo/os/$arch
Server=https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2023/12/27/$repo/os/$arch
ctrl+x  y  Enter  to save out  did a cat /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist  to verify and OK

pacman -Syyuu   (after each change/edit)

tried all four and no joy   (just keeps saying there is nothing to do)

Re: VM will not boot with today's update

BTW that was one edit (one line at a time for the dates of the 30th, 29th etc.) and then a reboot

Re: VM will not boot with today's update

There was a fatal bug in the mesa swrst driver (click almost any random thread of the last two days…) introduced in 23.3.2-1 on Dez 28, 2023 and it's fixed in version 23.3.2-2 since yesterday evening.
