hello arch linux friends
I'm Alexander , the developer of MeoW Linux , but all call me Tatzi.
We develop a new live linux with arch linux as base. It will take arch linux
asvantages to give the user a small powerfull linux. MeoW has Gnome desktop with Beryl as standart and it's installable. It takes also many advantages for live user because it uses the modularity of linux live scripts.
But MeoW is mainly for new linux users , its do many difficult things on it own. For example can load and configure the closed source graphic card drivers itself ( But also open source , *finger crossing for nouveau nvidia 3d drivers* ).
read more here if you interrest in MeoW :

cool, hope u have lots of luck, are you going to be primarily a live cd or is this a distro which is designed to be installed.
a mission statement and how u are going to be different to underground and archie would be interesting
Offline
So, you were based on Slackware? Looks great
Offline
I am happy to see yet another distro based on Arch. Good luck, all the best!
Just do me a favor and change the name to something more ballsy, like LION LINUX!
Offline
Looks cool. You will have to keep us posted.

when u say arch is the base of your distribution, can u give a bit more details on why's that, etc?
the site isnt very informative on any details on the above subject but also generally. all u can see is the packages contained in the cd which doesnt mean that much
There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)
[You learn that sarcasm does not often work well in international forums. That is why we avoid it. -- ewaller (arch linux forum moderator)

Looks really cool! Gradgrinds larch scripts could also be from interest to you (see my sig). Keep us up to date, tatzi!
edit: Sorry, I just saw that I already advertised them in the udev thread. I should get paid for that ;-)
Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch.

MeoW 2.0 was the last slackware release , 3.0 is arch based. MeoW is a small media linux with the principle that it just works. MeoW users shouldn't spend all their time to configure and setup many things self, MeoW do it self. I will distribute a linux that are running in live mode with many advantages and a own home to hdd script to save changes in live mode. Also you can install MeoW if you will do it.
We changed MeoW base to arch linux , because slackware is very good , but MeoW is a multimedia linux and will be more up to date. First we took ubuntu , but no chance , it didn't run , beside its to big. Last we took gentoo , its very great , but it's to complicate for new users and the time to install something its too long , short , it's doesn't the MeoW Style.
Then I test arch again ( I testet it far months too ) and I builded MeoW
with base cd and .... great
That is the linux for MeoW. Same principle like slackware , small , simple , a very nice pakage manager and up to date.
At the moment I test the speed of arch and I hope MeoW 4.0 will be also arch based. At the moment all looks great. Only a dirty copied arch was terrible slow on real hdd ( but I think its so slow because my method to install it , was very dirty  ).
Also MeoW is good for all who want a arch preconfigured , ready for install to hdd and small. MeoW base ( only base modules ) is a full Gnome and Xorg arch which contains only needed files. If you will build your own gnome arch , meow base will perfect for you.
--> Install type 1 -- install only meow base system to hdd
--> Install type 2 -- install MeoW 3.0 to hdd
--> Install type 3 -- install the current MeoW Live to hdd ( perfect , you can customize MeoW in live mode and install it to hdd with all these changes )
PS : I had written that the site isn't fully ready at the moment , but thank you for advise . All who have advises for me for making my MeoW site better are wished. ( sorry for some gramatical errorsr -- I'm german xD )

Will it work on a usb pendrive?
Mr Green
Offline
yes yes , linux live script support live system on usb. But 512 MB pen needed , because MeoW base (core) 280 MB and MeoW ultimate (normal) 350 - 370 MB. I know gnome is big , but all other de's and wm's don't be perfect for meow's philosophy. KDE to powerfull ( more for true linuxers ) , xfce ( very cool , but it cannot all that gnome can do ).. and at least I like gnome .. a cool mix between windows and mac style ( I think a good and easy desktop envoirement for new users ) .
But we thinking about a special MeoW version for sometimes , for example a light MeoW with XFCE for eastern
I don't know at the moment . I looking to the community and when MeoW gets a good statement from the community we can make the additional work on a special edition. xD
additional you can save changes on usb or move live data to usb and use an static xfs file on hdd with an size from 128 MB up to 4 GB for home and root directory ( good , if you don't want to use xfs file or savechanges that save all changes , MeoWs system saves only user changes -- wallpaper , etc ... all what the home directory contains )
I hope this give you some answers for you question

Seconded.

Don't call it Lion. Doesn't have a good ring to it. Call it Pussy Linux, so when I'm messing around configuring, and my girlfriend yells over: "What are you doing?" I can reply: "I'm fiddling with my Pussy". Ber-dum-tsch!
Call it what you want - although Panther sounds much harder than lion, wouldn't you said. I'd call my Linux distro Mr T Linux, and if someone tried to hack, it would detect and say "I pity the foo' who try and hack in to Linux. I pity the foo'..."

ok.. I had updated the software map. I think all these modules and numbers are sinceless for users. The new map describes the big parts of MeoW and his advantages for the User ( like Desktop --> Gnome and why MeoW uses it ).
Look at : http://meow.awardspace.info/index.php?id=42 for software map
and

Of course you can!

I'm pretty sure Judd would do that. E-mail him at jvinet@zeroflux.org He doesn't tend to update the website quickly, but I'm sure he'd get to it eventually.

Looks interesting. Will have to d/l it.
You gotta change the name though - folks will just say "MeoW, Linux for pussies!!"
Lion Linux would work, and would easily shorten to Lionux.

Hi tatzi,
what are the characteristics that make MeoW unique compared to the tons of available multimedia live cds?
My firefox refuses to display the pictures on the MeoW project site, are there other people experiencing this issue?

Sry , my publisher for my webspace is very terrible . Ok here some little specs for you .
-- MeoW is a live cd ( like ubuntu )
--> our philosophie is that MeoW will runs out of the box. The user mussn't handle with heavy difficult things like closed driver install , configuring of system , etc.
-- Support NVIDIA (closed drivers ) , ATI ( open drivers ) , INTEL cards
-- MeoW can run as live cd from HDD
-- MeoW has a own save system , with that you can use meow as live cd and save your home automatical to home ( like knoppix )
-- MeoW automount all drives
-- Ntfs3g support ( in 3.1 , first update , MeoW will automount all ntfs drives with write support )
-- MeoW has all of the most common plugins ready to use ( avi , xvid , divx , wmv , wma , mp3, mkv , mpeg 1/2/4 , http stream , flash and many more )
-- MeoW has installed Flash 9.x and Java
-- MeoW uses Gnome as desktop envoirement
-- Beryl is preconfigured and launchable from a desktop icon
-- uses a modular squashfs system ( makes the system very stable against totally crashes )
-- Firefox and Thunderbird , GAIM ( network )
-- Totem and Rhythmbox ( multimedia )
-- Evince and Abiword ( office )
-- Baseo burning application
-- all applications uses ALSA with dmix plugin ( software mixing ) , it's far far better as ESound daemon and Arts daemon
>>> with a size of 400 MB , decompressed with a size of 1600 MB
Planned for first update 3.1 :
-- module section on meow site ( to add more progs , that are all testet and safe )
-- Jack Soundserver
-- installer for live cd
--> live hdd install ( very stable method --> look at squashfs , easy to customize , and after a crash or bad programm , you can delete the module and the system runs fine like before )
--> real install
-- ATi closed drivers
-- max 450 MB iso file
.. so its not all , but the most important specs for MeoW , the ready to use media linux
