How to stream HDMI/USB source from console emulator to laptop screen?

I want to buy a console card that contains around 10k retro games and to connect it to the laptop as screen, It's originally intended for TV but I don't have one.

Is it possible to achieve this? My laptop doesnt have a HDMI port But I can find an adapter to VGA. And it looks that block is already an USB video capture device.
Which package, emulator? Or how to get to the goal?

Please don't embed huge images directly.

Generally speaking the connectors on a laptop are for output only. So probably not, without a distinct capture card or so.

Not sure from where you're asserting "And it looks that block is already an USB video capture device"

Also that thing sounds like a lawsuit for both game and emulator licences waiting to happen.

I might be asking crazy questions but I'm an engineer and would love to do anything to achieve my goals: If TV's have input VGA/HDMI connectors, does that mean I can take it and switch it with my laptop's connectors, I don't need the output anyway. Besides, how then can laptops be used as a monitor?

I am not familiar yet how capture cards work, but I searched on the internet on how it looks and it looked similar to the device from the image

Besides there are videos on youtube with the same (almost) exact product

Edit: It looks like that thing might not be a usb capture device after all

Re: How to stream HDMI/USB source from console emulator to laptop screen?

I said "generally speaking" if your particular laptop supports that then that might be workable, but you'd need to test and check whether your laptop explicitly supports this.

The stick is a "PC on a stick" that transfers it's screen to the relevant input device.

Also in case you're in the wrong place... Your laptop is currently running Arch?

If your system accepts HDMI as an input you could probably use OBS or so to capture from it. But I'd say chances are low.

My laptop is Toshiba C660-1LD, the only information I found about the VGA port is this: https://i.imgur.com/UXDSPiH.png
I assume its output only.

Yes, I use Arch btw :)

This laptop doesn't have a HDMI port (laptop was released in 2010), but I can use an adapter.

So If I purchase a video capture device, will it be possible to achieve my goal?

I'd assume with a capture device it would work then you can e.g. "stream" the capture into OBS and (ab)use that as a bridge to your screen.

Re: How to stream HDMI/USB source from console emulator to laptop screen?

The USB port on these things (like eg. the amazon fire stick) is for power supply.
You need a HDMI input to plug the HDMI of the dongle and your notbook will rather not have an HDMI input and you cannot just solder in the plug of a Tv…

Google for "hdmi to usb capture v4l2", you can then effectively "play" the output w/ eg. mpv like it was a dvb dongle.
