High power consumption with low cpu usage

I don't know exactly when this started, but my system exibits such behaviour for several weeks.
I was alerted of such behaviour by the fact that the battery, that previously lasted for about 5/6 hours now lasts less than one hour.
It's not  a battery problem, since although the machine is about two years old, and being little used, it still has a 100% capacity battery.

Initially I didn't care about it since this is a secondary machine rarely used just to check, sometimes, the email,
But now I tried to solve the problem.
Initially I thought it was a cpu problem, abut after having installed cpupower and monitored cpu usage I came to the conclusion that that was not the cause.

Then I installed the powertop program together with the xfce sensor panel plugin and observed that both programs reported
a power consumption up to 25-30 watts, much above the "right" value that should be 4-6 Watts.

Today I reinstalled Arch with a fresh downloaded iso file (2024.01.01) where I installed just the base components, (no graphic environment).

Just after boot I started powertop --auto-tune and then powertop -C, which reported an abnormal power consumption.

I suspect the behaviour started after having upgraded to some new kernel version, but I'm unsure  about when the problem begun.

I suppose there is some hardware device not properly configured, but I'm unable to detect (and then fix) it.

Check the power draw
- on the multi-user.target (no GUI session, no GUI DM - 2nd link below)
- w/ wifi and BT rfkill'd

Is there a parallel windows installation?

Re: High power consumption with low cpu usage

Something strange is happening:
My system now always starts in multi-user target, since I've not installed any graphic environment.
I've just installed a basic system, in a single boot installation, no Windows.

I've blacklisted iwlwifi, btusb, bluetooth and rebooted.

After logging, issuing the rfkill command shows no devices, neither active nor blocked,
however the powertop program at first shows a 3.80 W consumption, and after few seconds a consumption of 10.5W.
Having started it again with the -C option, it produces the attached file where the consumption is 10.5 W
and there are several hardware components at 100% usage level.

What's happening ?

Re: High power consumption with low cpu usage

CPU and SATA sounds like disk IO, check iotop.

Edit: also disable ntp, there's no network…

Re: High power consumption with low cpu usage

Some other info:
I just booted from a pendrive, containing a previous Arch installation program (ARCH_202305)
Just after booting, without installing anything, I issued the following command:
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/power_now
and found a power consumption of about 9W.
I suppose it is too much,  (in a idle state...) since I have a 28 WattHour battery, that with that consumption should last for about 3 hours,
while previously I surely have used more or less actively, the machine for 5/6 hours.

Can it be :

1) Just after boot the hardware is not properly initialized. It requires some specific driver or configuration.
can be the culpritt of the kernel or of the hardware drivers.

2) Something get broken at an hardware level, so that there is nothing I can do about it.

I hope it's the first case. how can I get sured about it ?

I'm now dowloading previous (older) Arch installation isos and try with them.

iotop refuses to work :
CONFIG_TASK_DELAY ACCT not enabled in kernel.

Is that the install iso? "uname -a"?

There are some "troubles" with old iotop and new kernels, IIRC.
Try iotop-c.

Re: High power consumption with low cpu usage

With current installed version :

iwlwifi, btusb and bluetooth blacklisted via modprobe.conf

uname -a:

Linux teclast 6.6.10-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri, 05 Jan 2024 16:20:41 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Powertop reports:

100% UHD graphic 600,
100% Dinamic Platform and Thermal Framework Processor
100% SATA controller

Power usage about 25 Watts, shown by Powertop and cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/power_now

Iotop not working
Iotop -c : no such option

booting from a previous install iso: (ARCH_202305)

iwlwifi, btusb and bluetooth blacklisted on the boot command line

uname -a :
Linux archiso 6.2.13-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed, 26 Apr 2023 20:50:14 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/power_now : about 14.2 Watts

powertop and iotop not available

Re: High power consumption with low cpu usage

I really dont' know what's happening here.

I had to enable iwlwifi and iwd (no bluetooth) in order to connect and install iotop-c,
than I tried to git clone it, from AUR, but it gave me "certificate is not yet valid",
so I downloaded it from github, compiled it and ran it.
It ran correctly. but showed no i/o activity.
Then I ran powertop, and it gave me a power consumption of only 3.80 Watts, that I think is a good value,
even if it showed 100% activity on several devices. Look at the attached report.
I then rebooted and switch off and on more than once, and now the consumption seems fixed to that value.
Has anyone any kind of explanation ?
