XFCE4 - how do I clear my system to start afresh?

XFCE4 used to be my default WM. I posted some of the issues I was having here but never did get to the bottom of it and started using KDE (which I am quite happy with). However, now that a new version of XFCE4 is available I tought I would try again. I had used pacman to remove my old installation about 6 months ago and I do keep my box regularly updated. So, I have now installed the latest version and renamed the .config files that were still in my home directory. When trying to launch XFCE4 I get about one or two seconds of what looks like XCFC4 loading and then nothing i.e. the standard Arch backdrop with no response to right or left mouse clicks or any keyboard combination that I can think of. I use ctrl-alt-backspace to return to kdm so that I can then load a different wm.

Is there a way that I can completely purge my system of any traces of XFCE4 and try starting again? I thought I had already done this but clearly whatever was messing up XFCE4 a year ago is still there, but I do not know what it is? My system works perfectly in every other respect. Very strange:/

try to move .config/ to .config.backup/ or something
XFCE store all configs in there

there might also be stuff left in ~/.cache and ~/.local from previous sessions

I note a similar thread here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=29273 I have tried the following:

Killing kdm and typing startxfce4 in a console - I see XFCE starting for about 5 seconds and then have a black screen with a mouse pointer. I have to kill X with ctrl-alt-backspace

Following the tips for clearing .config and .cache and .local and then killing kdm and running as above. This time I get the same result but end up with a blue screen :|

The output to the console upon killing X probably holds some clues but it is a bit beyond my knowledge:

Disable the composite extension; I have the same problem when using multiple monitors and XFCE with Composite; it simply crashes exactly as described

Also remember to start /etc/rc.d/hal as root; which will solve the second error

Thanks Spider.007. I can manage to turn on hal but I am not sure about disabling the composite extension? I have had a quick look in the xorg.conf for a likely candidate but nothing sticks out!

On second thought, I don't think the problem is exactly the same since the error message states Xcomposite is not support; which is more like a warning then an error related to your crash. Can you post your Xorg.0.log from /var/log; so we can see if something else might be causing this?

I have checked the log that you suggested and there is nothing unusual there i.e. I checked it after boot and then ran startxfce4 and checked it again - nothing! The only real output is in the console when forcing X to close, as given earlier?

Could you check what is in your $HOME/.xsession and $HOME/.xsession-errors files? You might try putting the `startxfce4` command in your .xsession and then execute startx to see if that changes anything; but I doubt it will change anything...

You're correct - it didn't work

However you have got me digging around and I have uncovered something very interesting. The .xsession-errors file tells me that KDE is trying to launch at the same time as xfce4! My .xinit file has startxfce4 as the default. I therefore ran startx, having killed kdm and saved the resulting .xsession-errors file. This is the result:

I cannot fathom why KDE is trying to launch when there is no reference to it in the .xinit file? I am a few steps closer to understanding this one - but any help will be gracefully accepted

That is why you should login on a normal terminal; kill your login-manager and then run `startx` to see if the problem really is XFCE. I don't see any reference to XFCE in the errors you posted; there is only KDE-stuff in there. Also; don't forget kdm probably runs .xinit, while startx will use .xsession to start your WM

Maybe we are misunderstanding each other? This is what I do:

ctrl-alt-F1
login as root
/etc/rc.d/kdm stop #i.e. KDM is not running
alt-F2
login as user
startx
(this is the point when I extracted the xsession-errors that I posted)

So, as you can see, kdm has already been excluded and this is why I am puzzled by the KDE stuff in the error file?

Unfortunately I have not had any time in the past few days to look into this - just grabbing a few minutes here and there. I might get a chance tomorrow evening (if I'm lucky )

You are right, I misunderstood. I have no clue why KDE starts; you should check .xsession and .xinitrc in your homedir, maybe even create a new user to make sure the problem is not related to your useraccount. As a last measure; run `strace -eopen startx` and see if you can figure out where KDE comes from
