[Solved] Nvidia broke after update

The moment I saw this during the update I knew smth was gonna break. So I took a photo and rebooted the pc. As expected, Arch broke.

Can't login with any of the 3 kernels I have. I've got tty access. How may I go on resolving this?

Hey, replying from my computer!

I manually updated the GPU driver from the TTY and it worked. 470 drivers are only available on the AUR so I did:

yay -S nvidia-470xx-dkms nvidia-470xx-utils lib32-nvidia-470xx-utils

I wish these were on the core repo. Do you know why these aren't?

Update these modules explicitly, they are patched for the current kernel

V1del, they already did.

AlwaysFinking, you should have also had an error building the modules before it built the initramfs. When you get errors like that, ALWAYS fix them before doing anything else, especially rebooting.

They aren't in the repos because nobody wants to maintain them there. They can be a real pain to maintain, especially once they go EOL, and 470xx goes EOL in July.

What happens when these go EOL?

Will there be no drivers, do I have to throw away my GPU?

The community has to patch them for newer kernels and/or xorg. For example, https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/ … idia-340xx

Doesn't that mean if the community is late to patch the driver, we'll have to wait with broken OS in situations like this?

Ah whoops I didn't grok that.

Yes that's what that means. In these cases it'd be a good idea to use some maintained LTS release (though that sadly wouldn't have helped here, as the patch was a stable backport)

Or opt for nouveau, kepler support is quite good here
