Grub error 21 ... when USB HDD used [SOLVED]

Hi there,

I've got WinXP Pro (hd0,0) & Archlinux 0.8 dual booting on my system.

Grub is installed to the MBR... WinXP & Arch boot fine, but if I plug in my Maxtor Ext.HDD it throughs Error 21!!!
How to I get it to load both OS's fine when I plug my USB drive in?

SystemSpec:
Mobo: Asus P4C800 Deluxe (set to native for SATA)
3 HDD all SATA ... Arch is (hd1,1)

Thanks

i guess your computer tries to boot from the maxtor - so you should just tell the bios not to?

Presumably the BIOS is booting from the right drive, since you're getting as far as a grub error.  Seems like when the external drive is switched on grub registers it as the first drive and the internal as the second, perhaps. I suppose you could test this by changing the hd0 to hd1, but then you'll have the same problem when its not on.

Thanks... looks like it was a setting in the BIOS.  When I connected the USB drive it gave it a HDD number... luckily there's an option to choose what HDD number you want it to be roll
