turning the screen off at boot

Hi all

Have an old laptop as a home nas, and recently have migrated that to arch.
(no gui). On the old system, I had a line on the grub.cfg file like

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="consoleblank=60"

and that did work to turn the screen off.

does not work on arch. same machine.

so I'm using vbetool, which is a rather forceful option, and quite inconvenient as it does shut the screen off until the machine is rebooted, whereas before any key would wake up the screen.

Would anyone have any clues / hints as to why would the grub option not work?
