Sway is very uncomfortable to look at

Hello, a bit of a vague topic title for a vague problem.

I have been using i3 for years and wanted to enjoy The Future™, so I decided to setup Sway. It seems to work fine, but I cannot look at the screen without feeling ill. It is a very unnerving feeling, as if it is impossible for my eyes to bring the screen in focus, or maybe like the screen is very grainy? But looking at it close, it does not seem grainy or out of focus. It causes a lot of fatigue and something akin to motion sickness. I have no such complains about my i3 setup.
What I have noticed is that sway seems a lot brighter, but reducing the brightness on my monitor does not seem to help much (still, weird). The only other thing I have been able to notice is refresh rate. I configure my screens as follows:

output DP-2 res 1920x1080@60Hz pos 0 0
output DP-3 res 1920x1080@60Hz transform 270

But xrandr seems to tell me that it does not actually run at 60Hz:

Screen 0: minimum 16 x 16, current 3000 x 1920, maximum 32767 x 32767

Edit: looking intensly at Sway: Looking at Firefox or glxgears in Sway is fine, no issues. Looking at just the blue background or the terminal, it is as if there is a lot of grain and my brain is constantly trying to spot the patterns in the dots. I have the exact same background color for i3, there is no such grain to find patterns in and therefore no strain.

Re: Sway is very uncomfortable to look at

Sorry if this sounds to silly - but have you tried setting a background image that you like?  Does that also appear "grainy"?  Is this graininess present with no windows open / tiled (i.e., *just* the background vs the background covered by a semi-transparent terminal)?

Re: Sway is very uncomfortable to look at

xrandr under wayland and an empty bag are worth about the value of the bag.

It's also not uncommon to have modelines that don't exactly match round frequencies:

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card0*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

You'll need https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/edid-decode-git

Then please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General to give a general idea about your setup there (HW + driver)

For clarification: I suspect the OP sees things (… ok, that sounds bad wink) in plain colors only and this is because of either an 6pbc/8bpc dithering issue or because of the GL context in sway using the 3D core (the different output names and frequencies smell a lot like some DDX driver on X11)

Re: Sway is very uncomfortable to look at

What happens on X11 if you remove xf86-video-amdgpu?
Are you running sway on the navi or the raphael chip?

How would I check this? So far I have just done crtl+alt+f6, login, type sway. No explicit choice over which GPU I use. I can disable the integated GPU from BIOS if that helps things?

Re: Sway is very uncomfortable to look at

grep -ri amdgpu /{etc,usr/share}/X11/xorg.conf*

and remove that config file.

It'll certainly make things deterministic, otherwise "glxinfo -B" will get you an idea and you can control the GPU w/ https://github.com/swaywm/sway/wiki#i-h … -not-start

I removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu, now Xorg works (well, all screens were renamed, so I needed to reconfigure some things). The xrandr output became different:

Integrated graphics have been disabled.

Maybe Xorg now also seems less comfortable to look at? Sway is still brighter than Xorg anyhow. It is hard to figure out if vague complaints still exist. Why are we removing xf86-video-amdgpu? Does it interfere with Sway, somehow?

Edit: I see now that I did use 20-amdgpu.conf for the tearfree option. So now I have a lot of screen tearing, which is uncomfortable.

Re: Sway is very uncomfortable to look at

Why are we removing xf86-video-amdgpu?

The point was to see whether sway looks the same as the modesetting driver/glamor.

Sway is still brighter than Xorg anyhow.

And assuming it does, what would I do next?

Sway is still brighter than Xorg anyhow.

Ah, yes, fixing redshift solves that. But it only reduces the strain, it does not eliminate it.
