[SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

Hi everyone,

I have a Asus Zenbook laptop equipped with a Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU. I followed all the instructions from the Arch Linux NVIDIA WIKI and all the packages related to my Nvidia GPU are installed. One important clarification is that I am using a custom kernel that I built a couple of months ago, because I needed to patch it in order to make the audio work in this computer. Back then, I built the kernel and after that I installed nvidia drivers with no problem and everything was working. But now I found out that the driver is not loading.

When I run

nvidia-smi -l

I get the following output:

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

If I want to run

nvidia-settings

I get a similar response:

ERROR: NVIDIA driver is not loaded

(nvidia-settings:35315): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 10:37:21.185: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

** (nvidia-settings:35315): CRITICAL **: 10:37:21.186: ctk_powermode_new: assertion '(ctrl_target != NULL) && (ctrl_target->h != NULL)' failed

ERROR: nvidia-settings could not find the registry key file or the X server is not accessible. This file should have been installed along
       with this driver at /usr/share/nvidia/nvidia-application-profiles-key-documentation. The application profiles will continue to work,
       but values cannot be prepopulated or validated, and will not be listed in the help text. Please see the README for possible values
       and descriptions.

I tried reinstalling nvidia-dkms, cuda, cudnn and restarting the computer but it does not work. Also I get the following error when running:

# mkinitcpio -P

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

I had a similar problem after installing kernel 6.7.4. My system was four years old. I have two 3090 RTX STRIX OC.
Since I updated, I get the same messages,

And a

[FAILED] Failed to start load kernel modules.
[FAILED] Failed to start load kernel modules.

I installed Nvidia-dkms and Cuda, which I have been running for almost four years. It looks like a driver issue. When troubleshooting, I installed the LTS kernel, and it gave me the same error.
Somehow the modules can not be loaded, and whe I run

lsmod | grep nvidia

There are no Nvidia modules being shown.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

did you set the modeset kernel parameter? https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA

or give us the output of "sudo dmesg | grep nvidia" and "lsmod | grep nvidia"

Is the driver installed for the current kernel?

Hi, thanks for replying!

Interesting enough both commands return empty on the terminal, not a single line of text.

As for the modeset, this is my /etc/default/grub.cfg:

# GRUB boot loader configuration

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Arch"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet nvidia-drm.modeset=1"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
GRUB_EARLY_INITRD_LINUX_CUSTOM="ux6404vi_cirrus_patch.cpio"

...

Any other ideas?

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

you can check the current kernel with
uname -r

And check the installation status with (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dynami … stallation)
dkms status

**EDIT: nvidia-drm.modeset=1 in your grub should be using an underscore "_", making it "nvidia_drm"

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

OP is booting a dead old 6.6.4 and that's not the LTS kernel.

@eenzaameendje the xorg log shows you're booting from a boot partition, but probably never updated the kernel there

uname -a
pacman -Qs kernel
lsblk -f
cat /etc/fstab

Edit, ftr:

[     6.347] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Fri Dec  8 22:35:00 2023

The xorg log is terribly dated, but mkinitcpio tries to use the same kernel as well

Hi, thanks for helping man. I start with your **EDIT comment first. I edited /etc/default/grub and changed "nvidia-drm.modeset=1" to "nvidia_drm.modeset=1", run "sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" and rebooted. But after the reboot I tried "nvidia-smi -l" and it is still giving the same output as the beginning of the thread.

The other commands return:

"uname -r"

6.6.4

and "dkms status" returns empty

Hi thanks for trying to help in this issue. Let me explain, I am using the kernel 6.6.4 that I built myself because I needed to patch it to make the audio work on my laptop. Unfortunately I cannot just use the LTS kernel as I won't have any audio. If I were to update the kernel I have to download the latest, compile it and patch it to get the audio working. When I did this with the 6.6.4, the nvidia driver was working perfectly, but after a couple of upgrades with "sudo pacman -Syu" it seems that it broke.

Here the output of the commands you ask:

"uname -a"

Linux fabrizio 6.6.4 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Dec  8 22:05:35 CET 2023 x86_64 GNU/Linux

"pacman -Qs kernel"

local/dkms 3.0.12-1

local/fuse3 3.16.2-1

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

You'll need the 6.6.4 version of linux-headers for dkms to work (and even then it's not guaranteed that the 550xx drivers build, though there's an LTS version, so good chance they do)

Edit: after installing them from the ALA, rebuild all dkms modules.

Hi, sorry for the noob questions, could you explain how do I do the installation and rebuilding?

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

You install linux-headers like every other package and then see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dynami … ld_modules

Edit: likely https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_L … ne_package

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

@seth do you mean that I have to install linux-headers, then downgrade them to 6.6.4, and finally run "dkms autoinstall"?

Is it really needed to run "dkms autoinstall" after this output?

"dkms status", but there seems a hook that hit for you.

"nvidia-smi -l"

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

Did you reboot?
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

Now I rebooted but it is still giving the same error when I do "nvidia-smi -l".

It's because the custom kernel isn't "6.6.4-arch1-1" but "6.6.4", you can probably try to just symlink the nvidia modules, otherwise (and more correctly) you'd need the header package from your kernel.

that I built myself

"How"?
If the answer is "manually, no pacman involved" you need to replicate https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … heads#L129

I did not see mkinitcpio regenerate in your log after installing the dkms module, not sure if its needed but It cant hurt:
mkinitcpio -P

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers installed but not loading

We are really getting close to the solution, now I see the following situation:

ls /lib/modules/6.6.4/
build          modules.alias.bin          modules.builtin.bin      modules.dep.bin  modules.softdep
kernel         modules.builtin            modules.builtin.modinfo  modules.devname  modules.symbols
modules.alias  modules.builtin.alias.bin  modules.dep              modules.order    modules.symbols.bin
     ~                                                                                                                   21:34:59   
❯ ls -l /lib/modules/6.6.4-arch1-1/updates/dkms/
total 42932
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root    56091 Mar 10 20:49 nvidia-drm.ko.zst
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 42347856 Mar 10 20:49 nvidia.ko.zst
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   672094 Mar 10 20:49 nvidia-modeset.ko.zst
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root     2394 Mar 10 20:49 nvidia-peermem.ko.zst
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   876415 Mar 10 20:49 nvidia-uvm.ko.zst

Do you think a symlink could work?

As for your question, yes, no pacman involved, I downloaded the kernel from https://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/pub/lin … 6.4.tar.gz and compiled it myself. But to be honest I don't know how to replicate this https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … heads#L129, since I followed https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … ompilation to do it.
