[SOLVED] Dolphin: Not opening file associations

I have a brand new install of Arch running. I had this problem yesterday which led me to do a reformat and just start anew, but Dolphin, the file manager hasn't been opening programs with its associated editor. Does anyone have any news on this or how I can fix it?? (Like text files won't open with gedit, libreoffice by double clicking, etc)

EDIT: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=482571

I guess it's broke, I'll just have to wait...

Re: [SOLVED] Dolphin: Not opening file associations

Sounds similar to the issue I'm having but maybe it's different considering my applications list is completely empty with Dolphin 24.02.

Yeah, I also use Awesome. Downgrading to the previous version didn't help either, it won't even launch.

Re: [SOLVED] Dolphin: Not opening file associations

Maybe I have the similar issue. Have tried to launch the plasma desktop from a tty and logout it and then start your wm in the same tty? I don't know why but it do help to me.

If I just turn on my computer and start i3 from tty, double click a file can't work properly.
If I double click a audio file it will play but without a new window open(I'm using mpv).  And other file they just can't open.
I closed my wm and started plasma desktop and the dolphin worked well.
Then I exit plasma and start i3 again, the file can be opened now. But still had some issues.

Anyway, I have found that: if haven't start plasma before:
the kde applications can't start other programs with gui, not only dolphin, but also the system-setting and so on.
If start plasma-desktop and close it and start the wm:
they can now start other programs, but the programs lost their themes(I mean, the QT programs don't show the correct themes). That won't happen in KDE5.
The theme of QT programs is correct if you start with dmenu or any terminal-emulator, including the konsole of dolphin.
That's all. I don't know how to solve it either.

Is your programs list also empty like on this screenshot?

Did you also downgrade dolphin dependencies? On my system, I would have to get kuserfeedback5 from ALA (Arch Linux Archive) since it's no longer in the extra repository (it's been replaced with kuserfeedback-6.0.0-2):

% sudo downgrade dolphin
[sudo] password for obap74:
loading packages...
warning: downgrading package dolphin (24.02.0-1 => 23.08.5-1)
resolving dependencies...
warning: cannot resolve "kuserfeedback5", a dependency of "dolphin"
:: The following package cannot be upgraded due to unresolvable dependencies:
      dolphin

:: Do you want to skip the above package for this upgrade? [y/N]

I guess I would also have to downgrade other packages such as kio and kio-extras. Sounds like a tedious process. Arch isn't my main distro so I won't bother trying to downgrade packages.

I'm just using AwesomeWM + a few Plasma packages, I don't have the whole Plasma desktop installed so I cannot do this. It shouldn't be necessary anyway.

I'm also using this in my .xinitrc to fix MTP/Fish/SFTP not working with Dolphin and AwesomeWM:

dbus-update-activation-environment --systemd --all

I don't have any theming issue with new Plasma apps (Ark, Dolphin) versions as far as I'm concerned. I'm using qt6ct to set Qt6 apps theme.

I'm using kvantum and with QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE=kvantum set. I'll try qt6ct.

No, it is not empty.

That works, but it won't show custom icons, only breeze if you have it installed. I like using candy-icons-git+

I made a report to KDE over this, maybe they will fix it.

Re: [SOLVED] Dolphin: Not opening file associations

Found this reddit post where OP has the same issue than me (empty programs list). OP also says that reinstalling some kf5 packages solved it. I haven't tried it yet.

Maybe you could also give it a try.

Re: [SOLVED] Dolphin: Not opening file associations

Running i3 here....adding the for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh loop from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc into my .xinitrc fixed the double-click/right click, open with issue for me.

Re: [SOLVED] Dolphin: Not opening file associations

Nope, that didn't work for me, unfortunately. What does your xinit look like? May I see??

Re: [SOLVED] Dolphin: Not opening file associations

This is the part I added that fixed the problem for me; I placed it before the i3 specific stuff:

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
  [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi

#i3
export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt6ct
xset -b
picom -b &
exec i3

That trick does indeed work, thank you for the information.

Anyways, this is somewhat of a fix, I guess until KDE fixes it themselves.
