[Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

I updated KDE Plasma today, after updating I noticed that Konsole no longer displays the little icons of Powerlevel10k:
Broken prompt

Before the update it was something like this:
Normal prompt

I can change the font in Konsole in the appearance tab to MesloLGS NF and then the icons work again, but I prefer that the general text in Konsole is in Hack font. Before the update I had the Hack font enabled in Konsole settings and the Powerlevel10k icons worked perfectly well, after the update if I have the Hack font enabled in Konsole settings the icons are broken (see first image).

Is there a way to still have working icons while having the Hack font selected in Konsole settings after updating to Plasma 6, or am I doomed to just use the MesloLGS NF font in the Konsole settings?

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

Is Hack https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/ttf-hack-nerd/ ?
There's "Hack Nerd Font", "Hack Nerd Font Propo" and "Hack Nerd Font Mono", if you're trying to use the variable width font and konsole isn't ok with that, you might end up w/ the default monospace font which does't provide those glyphs and has no config to resolve them either.

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

Thanks for the reply

I don't have ttf-hack-nerd installed, I have ttf-hack installed.
With "Hack font" I referred to how it showed up in Konsole settings see:
https://i.imgur.com/19ztimb.png
Should I install ttf-hack-nerd and keep ttf-hack, or remove ttf-hack and install tff-hack-nerd, or change something with the already installed ttf-hack?

Just switch the font to MesloLGS NF

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

I'd prefer not to just switch the whole Konsole font to MesloLGS NF. As said in my first post before the update I had the general font of Konsole in Hack font and the glyphs loaded just fine.

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

The font also can be changed only for the selected Profile: Konsole -> Settings -> Profiles -> Edit -> Appearance
This is just a temporary solution, perhaps in the future the developers will fix the problem. In general, after the update a whole bunch of problems with fonts emerged, keyboard layout flags, etc. are not displayed. I regretted that I updated, everything is very damp and unfinished.

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

Probably

remove ttf-hack and install tff-hack-nerd

MesloLGS NF is a ner font and the symbols might previously have been resolved from there.
You could play w/ https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Font_configuration and see whether you can convince konsole to return to that behavior, but using the nerd font you actually want to use will in doubt provide better glyph geometry matching (ie. the glyphs have the proper™ size)
Please replace the oversized image with a link.

@aumov, "keyboard layout flags" have absolutely nothing to do with fonts.

about "keyboard layout flags", that's what I meant, it just broke at the same time.

ttf-hack can't be removed due to dependency (required by plasma-integration)

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

That actually looks like the UI tries to use a font for the flag icons

fc-match -s :charset=1f1fa

And that's not a monospace font either, so apparently something in KDE6 fundamentally breaks glyph substitution.

fc-conflist

Edit: you can install the hack nerd font in parallel and use it in konsole for the time being.

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

Alright, I installed tff-hack-nerd and switched to that in Konsole settings and it looks alright thanks for the suggestion.

Do you think its needed to open a discussion / bug report on KDE's forum for my issue or @aumov's or would it probably just get fixed in an upcoming release?

About the flag issue @aumov reported, my flags seem to work fine in the Date & Time > Time Zone:
Flags
but if I copy a emoji from a website or from Kde's emoji selector it shows up in clipboard as:
Emojis

Edit: the emoji's show the same in Kate as in clipboard

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

If this is a glyph substitution issue, the behavior will depend on the specific font used in either cases.
What's your KDE default font setting, what is the output of

fc-match sans-serif
fc-match -s :charset=1f1fa
fc-conflist

Kate will most likely use the (default) monospace font of the system

fc-match monospace

What if you use the hck nerd font for this (or in kate specifically)?

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

Kde default fonts:
Default fonts

Output of listed commands:
https://pastebin.com/eSL3wsMV

For me personally it's not that big of a problem if I cant use emoji's in Kate or whatever, or at least not that big of a problem that I would switch my Noto font for the hack nerd font,  but would be nice to know if this is a configuration problem on my end or if its a general Arch problem or if its a general KDE problem.

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

Change your default Fixed width font to "Hack Nerd Font Mono", should (probably) fix kate.
Though

fc-match monospace
NotoSansMono-Regular.ttf: "Noto Sans Mono" "Regular"

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Font_c … dard_names (obviously don't copy and paste that, you'd choose your preferred fonts)

The US flag can be resolved from
NotoColorEmoji.ttf: "Noto Color Emoji" "Regular"
NotoSans-Regular.ttf: "Noto Sans" "Regular" (your default sans serif)

I suspect

+ /home/user/.fonts.conf: No description

is written by KDE?
What does the file look like?
wrt. the above link about default fonts, KDE will likely steamroll over that file.
If we need to fix it, you'll have to immute it (we'll see then, just to spare you the frustration of somehow trying to fix it and seeing it undone w/ the next re-login)

removing ttf-hack and install tff-hack-nerd and switching my profile on konsole to hack nerd font did the trick for me

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

Changing my default fixed width to Hack Nerd Font did not fix Kate not displaying emoji's and flag emoji's as rectangles.

 /home/user/.fonts.conf

Is indeed probably generated by KDE, the file contains (opening /home/user/.fonts.conf with kate or nano):

 <?xml version='1.0'?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM 'fonts.dtd'>
<fontconfig>
 <dir>~/.fonts</dir>
</fontconfig>

I'm going to go sleep for today, Just so you know that I wont reply for the next few hours.

Edit: didn't notice .fonts was a folder, within .fonts is .uuid file and another folder named "m" containing:
m

Edit 2: fixed grammar + added more detail

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

Please don't bump. The communication is async in nature, there's no reason to sign in or out.

The config only adds ~/.fonts to the font paths.
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=482864
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=478549 (Reported: 2023-12-15, seems unaddressed)

https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-121816 => https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-110502 says "works as intended" roll
I guess QFont::NoFontMerge has been defaulted either by Qt o KDE but it doesn't show up in any KDE bug, https://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?quicks … oFontMerge

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

Sorry for the bump, and thanks for the research.

Ill go ahead and mark this post as solved as my original problem has been more or less resolved, and ill see where the qt bug report go's.
Bummer if this isn't gonna get fixed because its "intended".

I think you mis-spelled "nuts".
Feel free to hook into the KDE bugs and suggest to default to unflag QFont::NoFontMerging from the styleStrategy()

Re: [Solved] Konsole not loading certain fonts after Plasma 6 update

Sorry for responding to a solved thread but there is some new and relevant information which might be useful to OP and others encountering this issue. Hopefully this does not break any rules (I checked and I'm still not sure).

Apparently this change has been already reverted in qt-base 6.7 (if I understand this page well): https://codereview.qt-project.org/c/qt/qtbase/+/548763

According to Qt wiki, 6.7 is scheduled to release on 02.04.2024 (https://wiki.qt.io/Qt_6.7_Release). In the meantime I have slightly modified the patch which I downloaded from above Qt code review page to work with current qt6-base (version 6.6.2) found in Arch repos which you can apply yourself: https://0x0.st/XsEU.diff. This resolves this issue without having to install and/or use another font in Konsole and other applications where it also appears.
